RHY.10:4.1 - Establish the reference the passage actually uses

Demonstrate or identify the recurring reference, entry and any larger grouping that matters. Specify through performance, notation or ordinary language which event or feature marks each needed landmark. A pulse, a cycle beginning and the accent of a phrase may occur together once and diverge later.

Make local references compatible where interaction requires it. One performer may count two equal divisions while another counts three over the same span. They need to recognize the relevant common landmarks; they need not use identical internal counting.

Use RHY.4 if the physical mark and the cue the performer receives disagree. Use RHY.9 if a necessary cue is unavailable during the passage.
