RHY.4:5.1 - Correcting a slowly rising sound

Assume a constructed sound trial uses a beat at 500 ms. The sound’s acoustic start is at 500 ms; repeated click-alignment judgements place its perceived location near 540 ms under the chosen listening conditions.

A candidate correction starts the unchanged sound 40 ms earlier, at 460 ms. If the perceived offset remains the same, the predicted location is 500 ms. Replay checks that prediction in the passage. Changing the envelope instead would require a new estimate.

The arithmetic establishes the predicted shift from the stipulated inputs. It does not establish that every slowly rising sound has a 40 ms offset or that a different listener will make the same judgement.
