Nelson’s Solkattu Manual (2008), Introduction, supplies the distinction between phrase construction and instrumental realization. Adopt phrase-sensitive correspondence; reject a universal syllable-to-stroke substitution.
The Takadimi convention supplies the target position labels used in the bounded example. Its rule does not retain the source’s sound classes. A separate event-label correspondence restores that distinction when the receiving task needs it.
Cha’s Takadimi reconsideration, pp. 570–574 and note 7, supplies the sustain/rest counterexample and an explicit extension. Sections :4.2 and :5.4 use it to make the translation’s input sufficient. A bare syllable string, its timed performance and a score-supported reading are different inputs. The method requires the receiving task’s result to remain recoverable; it does not adopt a universal bijection between syllable strings and scores.
Toussaint’s The Geometry of Musical Rhythm (2020) supports cyclic constructions and differing equivalences. Keep rotation or reversal equivalence only for the selected comparison; a performance entrance can require the information the equivalence discards.
A literal symbol replacement is cheaper only when the source and target meanings coincide for the admitted family.
