RHY.6:4 - Solution
RHY.6:4.1 - Recover the source’s rhythmic interpretation
Identify the actual convention, its beat or cycle reference, the relation of phrases to that reference, and any articulation or realization distinctions consumed by the receiving task.
Use RHY.2 and RHY.5 results when they already supply this information. If the source is a recording, distinguish observed features from the chosen transcription. If it is a prototype, retain the performer choices it leaves open. Ask a prepared source practitioner when a sign’s meaning depends on a phrase or tradition you cannot recover.
Select a bounded family for the proposed translation. A rule for a four-part equal subdivision does not automatically cover unequal divisions, tempo changes or free timing.
RHY.6:4.2 - Construct a shared rhythmic correspondence
Align the relevant occurrences or phrase portions, then relate their positions under the source and target references. Preserve cycle identity and phase when later entry or coordination needs them. Carry duration, articulation, grouping or continuous course when the receiving operation consumes those features.
Choose a convenient shared description for the construction, such as ordered positions with event labels. It is a working intermediary whose fields come from this task, not a universal format for all rhythm.
For a duration-sensitive translation, align more than attacks. Locate where a sound continues across a beat, where it ends and where silence is prescribed. A printed continuation sign must retain that meaning in the receiving spoken or performed form. If the source has only attack labels, return duration as unresolved instead of inventing a sustained note or a rest.
When a source syllable names a sound class and the target names a beat position, derive the target sign from the event’s position. Preserve the sound class separately if needed. When a phrase maps to a learned instrumental realization, establish that phrase correspondence; do not manufacture a one-sign–one-stroke dictionary.
RHY.6:4.3 - Expose collapsed distinctions
Look for two admitted source cases that translate to the same target. If such a pair exists, would the receiving operation need different answers?
When such a pair needs different answers, retain the missing distinction as a target feature or companion representation, or keep the relevant source phrase or recording accessible with a way to locate that distinction. When the answers coincide, that loss is harmless for this operation. Consulting source material to recover missing content is different from interpreting a target answer back into the source question in :4.4. That answer may need the same timing, a compatible performance or the original expression; state which the work requires.
A target with richer notation cannot recover source information that has already been discarded. For a continuous shape reduced to sample points, name the interpolation or reconstruction assumption if the receiver must act between points.
RHY.6:4.4 - Perform the receiving operation and return its result
Use the target to carry out the intended comparison, reading or construction. Interpret the answer against the source question. A target calculation of phase, for example, needs to return a position under the source’s cycle and orientation.
Keep reading separate from physical performance. Correct target syllables can express the intended positions while the receiving performer still lacks the corresponding instrumental or movement technique.
For a target edit, distinguish a changed rhythmic requirement from a representational rewrite. Update the source-side event correspondences, then test that the translated new source gives the requested target. Retain source restrictions whose loss would change the proposal’s identity or admissible performance.
RHY.6:4.5 - Keep the translation at the needed scope
Retain the rule, reference, required companion and meaningful loss with the receiving material. A local example can establish that translation; a reusable family needs a rule covering the admitted cases.
Stop with a usable target, a narrower adequate use, or a named missing correspondence. Further comparisons are worthwhile only when their possible result could change reliance or the construction. Reopen the affected correspondence when the source or target interpretation, reference, receiving question or admitted edits change; retain unaffected results. NOT.5 supplies the general preservation, reflection and return questions.
