RHY.Preface:10 - Architectural Rationale - Why the methods are divided this way

Organizing the language solely by notation systems would repeat common operations and obscure differences between representing and performing. Organizing it solely by discrete attacks would make comparisons convenient while omitting the continuing contribution in brushes, sustained sound and movement. The chosen repertoire separates the operation from the representation and retains the material relation needed by the task.

Arrangement, shared correction and simultaneous layering have different results. An assignment of actions does not establish their coordination; coordination of available layers does not establish a missing constituent capability. Practice, a capability probe and an observation also answer different questions. Keeping them distinct permits direct use and local repair while their result connections support larger work.

General representation design comes from Notational Engineering. Human-development methods supply task, practice and probe constructions. Music and Dance Practice Engineering supplies broader performing arrangements and cultural work. RHY contributes the rhythmic operations these methods need. Repeating their complete methods under narrower names would obscure the boundary and make both accounts harder to maintain.

The language has no fixed number of conceptual levels. A general method can contribute to a rhythmic operation, which contributes to a musical phrase, a figure and a larger performance. The same contribution can serve several combinations. Which relation actually holds—specialization, reuse, result dependence or ongoing constituent work—matters more than heading depth or a single tree.

A new pattern is warranted when a recurring rhythmic operation has its own useful result and conditions not supplied by the existing combination. Another example alone does not establish that need.
