RMP.Application:6 - Restore a service while investigating an unresolved mechanism

This is a constructed illustration; its working conditions are stipulated.

A team observes longer response times after enabling a cache. It must decide what to do for today’s service. An applicable operating procedure and current observations support restoring the previous configuration; the authorized operator can do that under its ordinary conditions. Restoring acceptable service does not require first discovering a general explanation of caching performance.

A separate inquiry asks under which workload conditions contention for the cache’s shared lock can worsen response times despite reducing remote requests. Suppose the available sources do not settle this mechanism for the specified implementation and concurrency range. The intended research return is a bounded, criticizable claim that could change the model and later design guidance. This inquiry seeks a result of its own even if today’s operating choice is already settled.

Use the distinction between model, explanation, research and advice (PSDA.Reference:2.1) to separate the contributions. A simulation reproduces the delay under a locking hypothesis. Another model reproduces it through changes in request composition. Matching the aggregate delay therefore fails to discriminate these accounts. PSDA.3 preserves what each model assumes and supports; RMP.2 asks what obtainable observation or comparison could challenge the competing mechanism claims.

Continue with a design whose measures and workload conditions can discriminate the mechanisms. A candidate design calls for observing lock waiting and request classes during a replay that preserves the relevant concurrency. Qualify its measurement, comparison, access and workload correspondence for this question before selecting it. A replay that serializes the requests would remove the interaction the question concerns. Repeating the same aggregate simulation would leave the two explanations compatible.

If a qualified design is available and its contribution warrants the whole burden, operationalize it with RMP.3, perform the inquiry under its qualified domain Method, and use RMP.4 to preserve the actual trace, with RMP.5 for interpretation and RMP.6 when a further credibility test is worthwhile. Interpret the actual material before returning a bounded claim. If the required observations cannot be obtained at worthwhile cost, finish the present research-allocation question with no new study and an unresolved mechanism claim. Do not relabel that stop as confirmation of either model. Today’s supported service restoration remains usable in either branch.

Suppose suitable later evidence supports the locking explanation only within the tested concurrency range. Return that range and its grounds to the model and design users. The service owner still needs the qualification appropriate to any proposed new configuration and the authority to deploy it. EXD.4 helps explain why “we understand one mechanism” differs from “this new configuration is ready to use”, without requiring the recipient to agree to deployment. A later workload outside the supported range reopens applicability; it does not erase the earlier result.
