B.1.5.EW:4.2 - Recover an encompassing performance

Ask what larger action is being done through the selected action now. Explain the organizing connection: which part of that larger action this performs, how it combines with other contributions, and under which conditions.

For an actual occurrence, this connection must concern the performed work. Merely intending to obtain a later benefit is insufficient. A contribution can constitute part of an ongoing attempt even when that attempt fails; successful completion is a further question.

Distinguish three possibilities where they change your answer:

  • The same Work enacts several Methods.
  • An independently identifiable performed suboccurrence is an operational part of encompassing Work under A.15.1.
  • One Work supports, overlaps or supplies a later result to another without being its constituent.

Choose the occurrence account that fits the work. Several descriptions do not require several Work occurrences. Identify a suboccurrence separately when its extent, performer, result, resource use or correction needs to be distinguished.

A useful test is to explain the positive connection, not just what would fail if the action disappeared. Removing an external power supply can stop a calculation; that fact alone does not make power generation part of the analyst’s Work.
