Sources, relations and renewal

Source use and limits

The sources below shaped the connected language. Their practical contributions, evidence and limits remain distinct. The detailed comparisons in each pattern’s SoTA-Echoing section should be used when a source-specific choice matters.

Source familyContribution retained in this editionBoundary, alternative and return
David Spinks, The Business of Belonging (2021)A purposeful offer, manual early organising, workable participation, recognition, organising support, provision and accounts of value. These inform CB.1–12.Treat numerical anecdotes and company examples as historical source accounts. Growth, commercial retention and visible activity do not define every useful contribution. Compare resources, services and smaller voluntary arrangements against the actual need.
Etienne Wenger-Trayner, Beverly Wenger-Trayner, Phil Reid and Claude Bruderlein, Communities of practice within and across organizations, second edition (2023)Positive forms of learning through practice, activities and relationships, shared repertoire, reciprocal comparison, boundary work, collective stewardship, value inquiry and renewal. Temporary participant groups also supply shared observation and support. These contributions inform the corresponding methods, especially CB.4/5/7/10/11/14–16.Use these forms when joint participation helps. Their community-of-practice focus does not require communication for every wider cultural purpose. Treat development dimensions as optional, and use C.28/RMP for a question that depends on causal explanation.
Community Canvas Guidebook (2017)Historical organising questions about common decisions, mandate, mixed local and common responsibility, and conflicts involving decision-makers, developed in CB.8/13.An informal repertoire supplies options. The actual arrangement needs a valid mandate, feasible operations and correction; a new body is unnecessary where an adequate owner can decide.
Core Protocols, linked in CB.13:4.5.1A connected decision option for an adopting small team. Its participation obligations need explicit acceptance; this is not the default governance of a voluntary community.
A. Levenchuk’s community ontology and systemicity essays (September 2024), read with C.36Cultural contribution can develop carriers of a practice without a communicating collective or one collective agent. CB.1 and the independent-use branch make that choice practical.A conceptual distinction does not establish the effectiveness of an intervention. Obtain the method, learning, provision and use observations that the selected contribution needs.
Research and practitioner reports used by individual patternsWork on participation rules, appeals, context and repeated action qualifies the mechanisms and evidence in CB.8/12/13. The Duolingo contributor-programme announcement gives a historical account of changed production conditions in CB.9.Retain the actual population, observations and limitations. Moderator reports, written rules, self-reported habits and an organisation’s explanation answer different questions from experienced fairness, automatic performance or causal effectiveness. Follow each body’s exact source and comparison.
FPF Core and the domain suppliers belowCultural distinctions, useful-contribution comparison, actual work arrangements, learning provision, professional-method development, evidence, capacity and resource reasoning.Reuse the needed substantive result. A reference alone does not obtain qualified work, authority, access or an operating service.

Source returns: The Business of Belonging; Communities of practice guidebook, second edition; Community Canvas; community ontology; systemicity discussion.

The Guidebook adaptations are attributed to its four authors and retain CC BY-NC 4.0 as identified in the affected patterns. The constructed cases and connections are developed here. Other third-party contributions retain the terms and qualifications stated at their source returns. The edition’s original content has the separate licence stated in Edition and use.

Actual supplier returns

Use the external contribution when the receiving question requires it. The cited frameworks retain their own content and edition boundaries; these returns do not include them inside Community Building.

Receiving difficultyContribution to obtain and its direct supplier
A proposed cultural intervention confuses transmission, performance, retention or renewalC.36 supplies the cultural distinctions. CB.1 selects a useful contribution in the actual participant setting; CB.11/14 apply continuation and renewal choices.
The proposed community benefit lacks a serious alternative or supporting conditionsSTR.5 develops comparison of useful contributions and provision. CB.1 applies that construction to the cultural or community offer.
Work, help, access or authority is inferred from a role nameOCE.2 recovers the actual work and relations. OCE.11/12 support provision and coordinated work; OCE.14 revises an established arrangement. CB.13 obtains an initial or renewed common mandate when that is missing.
A person needs to acquire a practice or receive useful learning supportHCD.5 and HCD.6 supply method selection, representative practice and feedback; HCD.7 and HCD.8 help obtain providers, access and missing learning support. HCD.2 compares programmes for a particular person. A complete service may also need SYSE contributions.
A teaching publication in Guide or Slidement form is being producedLearning Product LPF (local learning-publication practice; obtain separately) is a separate Russian-language rolling publication for those formats. Obtain its text and relevant production practice separately; if they are unavailable, that proposed publication contribution remains unprovided. HCD’s learning-method and support contributions remain available for other parts of the arrangement.
A practice is known but poorly expressed, or a new method claim must be developedMethod Engineering supplies recovery, description, development, trial, adaptation and maintenance. RMP.1 distinguishes sufficient existing knowledge from a research need. CB.14 organises the practitioners’ contribution and its use; it does not replace those methods.
A community promise exceeds capable time, access or fundingOPS.5 supplies capacity reasoning; OPS.14 handles timing of an actual payment commitment; MA.1 and MA.2 supply the selected cost object and relevant cost account. CB.9 obtains the actual contributions and terms.
A scarce shared resource requires use and upkeep rules, or a rule must changeECO.7 and ECO.9 provide methods for arranging shared use and changing resource rules. CB.8/13 connects them to participation, mandate and correction where those are needed.
A result is used as a causal explanationC.28 distinguishes the causal-use question and necessary support; RMP supplies a fitting inquiry when required. CB.10’s account of particular value does not replace that work.
A complete service, tool or provider arrangement is missingSystems Engineering provides methods for defining the whole system and choosing how to obtain it. CB.1/9 can identify and arrange the community contribution within that larger provision.

The domain returns above select these stated public versions: Strategy’s first working edition of 20 September 2026; HCD’s twenty-pattern version of 22 September 2026; OCE, ME, RMP and OPS versions of 20 September 2026; MA 1.0; ECO’s version of 22 September 2026; and SYSE’s version of 26 September 2026. Use these version cues when comparing a changed supplier with the contribution relied on here. The table names the relied-on content and receiving use; each remains a contribution from its supplying framework.

A later edition of a supplier reopens only the CB claims and uses that rely on its changed contribution. For example, a change to the qualification of a method trial affects the CB.14 trial claim; it does not by itself reopen the garden’s session-time decision. Removing the adequate professional method from the independent-use application would invalidate its chosen learning route: obtain or develop that method before continuing the same promise.

A new or unknown professional method, a complete service and a commercial strategy retain their own development questions. Use the available contributions identified above, and obtain any further result needed by the particular community’s promise before relying on it.

Renew the affected contribution

Begin with the changed fact and the use it can defeat. A failed invitation may concern access or wording; repeated inability to obtain qualified help may defeat the offer itself. A disputed incident may require correction of one response, a changed rule or a renewed mandate. New evidence about a professional method can invalidate a repertoire entry while leaving the social connection useful.

Return to the smallest affected source, method or arrangement. Check the proposed change through the receiving work and a consequential contrasting condition. Reuse unchanged contributions whose conditions still hold. Obtain the additional evidence required for any stronger causal, professional or population claim. Changes to representation, common commitments or the right to use resources need the relevant people’s decisions as well as a revised description.

For this pattern language, repeated reader failure should reopen the affected explanation, example or practical entry. A change in the promised field or useful pattern division reopens the framework’s organization. A changed source or external method first reopens its particular adopted contribution and dependent CB uses. A broken link first needs a working source return; repairing the link establishes access to text, not the text’s adequacy.

Keep a usable return when changing a published pattern’s title, order or interpretation. CB.1–16 are stable local addresses within the Community Building framework; Part and section positions are publication navigation. Preserve an old address when the practical answer continues. A different answer needs an explicit replacement or migration explanation so that a previous citation does not silently acquire a new meaning.
