GOALS.1:4.2 - Distinguish the uses of the statement
Explain which of the following meanings the current statement carries. Several may coexist with different values.
| Meaning | What it says | Immediate consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Desired outcome or maintained condition | What should become true or remain adequate for the recipient. | Construct its achievement or continuation test in GOALS.2. |
| Ambition | A worthwhile outcome beyond or different from the present expectation. | Expose the gap and search for a feasible way, provision or narrower inquiry. |
| Forecast | What is expected under stated present assumptions. | Keep the basis and uncertainty available; update them when evidence changes. |
| Commitment | What another participant may rely on under an effective agreement or obligation. | Obtain the relevant authority, acceptance and means; change it through its actual terms. |
| Inquiry goal | The answer or discriminating knowledge needed for a decision. | Specify a question, adequate method and useful possible conclusions. |
| Learning goal | A capability that a named person or intended audience should acquire for later work. | Identify the performance, allowed support and evidence; obtain the learning arrangement. |
An aspiration may be deliberately uncertain. A committed investigation can reliably promise a qualified answer or a truthful inconclusive result under its agreed scope, while the desired discovery remains uncertain. A learner can undertake practice without promising that a fixed number of hours will establish mastery. These arrangements become usable when their receiving parties understand the distinction.
In an operating example, ambition 12, forecast 8 and a supported promise of 10 need not be forced into one number. The ambition locates a possible improvement, the forecast informs response and the promise governs reliance. If the means currently support only 8, the supposed promise of 10 needs further provision or renegotiation; writing it on a goal sheet does not supply the difference. Use OPS.13 and OPS.21 for the actual operating construction.
