HCD.10:0 - Use This When
Use this pattern when representative tasks and focused-practice episodes already exist, and the practitioner must decide what to change across the next episodes so that a person encounters a decision-bearing difference, returns to practice at another time, selects among similar Methods or actions, or works with a different level of challenge or help. Start from the target action, prior attempts, intended later conditions, and the observation the change should make possible.
The first useful result is a condition-sensitive practice progression: a bounded set of next episodes in which each selected change has an intended discrimination or development purpose, task conditions, separated timing where spacing is used, retrieval and source conditions, permitted and actual support, progression rule, observation, safe stop, and reopen condition. The result may select one move, several compatible moves, or stable supported practice before any increase in difficulty.
Spacing means distributing repeated practice episodes across separated times. It does not by itself require retrieval, source removal, interleaving, greater difficulty, or less help. Whether an episode asks the learner to retrieve, consult a source, use AI, or work with changed support is selected separately from the target contribution and development Method.
The practical gain is discriminating practice rather than decorative variety. The practitioner can say which changed condition should change the warranted action, why two tasks are mixed, why an interval matters, and when support should remain, change, or return. An observed failure can reopen the assumption instead of automatically increasing difficulty.
Do not use HCD.10 to build the first representative task, repair an unavailable provider, infer transfer or retention from a schedule, or intensify challenge when the basic operation is not yet feasible. Return to HCD.6 for task design, HCD.7/HCD.8 for support, and HCD.11–HCD.13 for stronger evidence interpretation. When apparent failure could instead be applicability, access, expression, adaptation, enactment, or support, obtain the applicable E.23.CAE differential before assigning more practice on the assumption of capability loss.
