HCD.10:0.1 - Working Terms
| Name in this pattern | What it denotes |
|---|---|
| decision-bearing condition | A task, context, resource, support, configuration, timing, risk, or evidence value whose change can alter the warranted human action or Method. |
| variation | A change to one or more decision-bearing conditions intended to expose preservation, change, or failure of the target action. Renaming the setting while keeping the same answer is not useful variation. |
| spacing | Repeated practice episodes distributed across separated times, with the interval and intervening activity made explicit. It is a timing relation, not an automatic retrieval or support rule. |
| retrieval condition | What the learner must recover without reopening a named source or answer, what remains supplied, and why that distinction matters to the target contribution. |
| source condition | Which references, data, patterns, tables, calculators, tools, or other resources are available and what the learner must do with them. Source use can itself be part of expert performance. |
| support condition | Permitted and actually available human, peer, tool, AI, cue, example, or specialist help for an episode. A support change is separate from an interval. |
| interleaving | Mixing episodes from distinguishable task or Method families so that selection or discrimination is required, rather than presenting all examples of one family together. |
| progression | A conditional change in challenge, complexity, independence, speed, variability, consequence, or support based on prior attempts and the intended later use. |
| condition-sensitive practice progression | The selected next episodes, each with its purpose, task conditions, timing, retrieval, sources, support, expected observation, decision rule, stop, and qualification. |
Variation, spacing, retrieval, source use, interleaving, support change, and progression are different design choices. One episode can combine them, but the practitioner must be able to say what each selected choice contributes and which observation could disconfirm it.
