HCD.6.1:2 - Problem
An expert has learned to pick out features that a novice does not notice. Naming the feature can help direct attention only after the learner has some way to recognize what the name refers to. More explanation in the same terms can leave this circularity intact.
Practice can also teach a misleading cue. A learner may associate the teacher’s gesture, a color or the order of the examples with the answer, while the relation needed in later work remains unnoticed. Even a useful exercise can then fail to transfer.
