MDPE.Preface:7.4 - Style development and continued practice

This profile applies when later performers must produce recognizable variation across occasions. It reuses the field-specific performance and teaching contributions and adds relations among production, recognition, selection, transmission, memory, and support. Development builds the capabilities and means of reproduction; the practice’s ecology affects what participants can encounter and select; cultural evolution changes what is transmitted, recombined, retained, or lost. Several of these processes can operate during one event and across different periods. The project selects the local relations it can change.

MDPE.21:4.1 works through a local Zouk choice between choreography-and-showcase and partnered-recurrence arrangements. Because the intended use is social dancing, the project selects a rotating-partner and varied-music trial with observations of readable response, balance, recovery, and refusal. MDPE.13 becomes useful if selection keeps rewarding a different result; MDPE.22 becomes useful if another class or event cannot be sustained. MDPE.18 and MDPE.19 address memory and reproduction when present traces no longer suffice. The selected architecture and specified first trial are useful results before population-wide uptake is known.

This profile adds recurring support and observation to the work needed for one occurrence. Retain several style or performance alternatives through MDPE.16 only with the support that keeps them usable. A school, platform, or event series can also constrain later performers by rewarding camera-legible or easily judged features. MDPE.14 compares the resulting conflict; MDPE.20 returns qualified competing trajectories when a forecast can change the next investment. Additional observation is selected only when worthwhile and obtainable. The new-whole question in MDPE.24 arises when evidence about persistence and relations would change the project boundary. A project concerned only with one commissioned work stops earlier.
