MDPE.24 - Decide Whether a Music-or-Dance Practice Has Formed a New Whole
Pattern type: Music-and-Dance whole-reidentification pattern
Public result: a project-boundary and architecture decision, or the observation still needed
MDPE.24:0 - Use This When
Use this pattern when a school, scene, camp network, event circuit, platform practice, canon, genre, or style is called a new cultural level and that claim would change what the project engineers, funds, maintains, measures, governs, or holds responsible.
Visibility and influence are not enough. One famous teacher, popular label, recurring event, camera convention, recommendation algorithm, archive, or viral phrase can change a practice while remaining a participant, tool, memory, or mediating relation inside an existing whole. Conversely, a network or practice may become stable enough to have its own changing states, memory, transitions, selection, persistence, boundary, and effects on lower-scale Music or Dance Work. Treating that arrangement only as “background” can then hide the actual engineering subject.
The first useful result is one of three answers for the current project:
- keep the existing whole and change a named participant or relation inside it;
- treat a candidate new whole as the EntityOfConcern and reframe the project around its boundary and architecture;
- leave the question open and name the observation needed before the project boundary changes.
Do not use this pattern when “level” merely means a teaching difficulty, skill grade, analytical zoom, hierarchy label, or step in a Method. Use the direct capability, learning, architecture, part–whole, or unfolding pattern.
MDPE.24:1 - The Recurring Difficulty
Music and Dance make new-whole claims especially tempting. A named practice can have its own vocabulary, followers, visual identity, press coverage, classes, and media while still being produced and selected through an older scene. A single festival can recur without becoming an event-system whole distinct from its provider. A platform can amplify short dance phrases without the platform itself becoming a dance style. A canon can guide later performance while remaining an episteme used by Agents and Systems rather than an acting cultural subject.
Two expensive errors follow:
- Premature enlargement. The project invents governance, measures, maintenance, ownership, or causal powers
for a “new level” that is only a label, a local
U.SystemRolekind, a classification under that kind, an analytical grouping, or an influential participant. - Missed reidentification. The project continues optimizing isolated classes, artifacts, or events although a persistent network now has its own architecture, constraints, risks, memory, and recurring Work.
Ask whether the existing whole remains the right subject of the claim that matters to the project.
MDPE.24:2 - Solution
Compare two explanations before changing the project boundary:
- existing-whole explanation: the observed change comes from new participants, capabilities, Methods, measurements, media, selection relations, or architecture inside the already identified whole;
- new-whole explanation: a different whole now has to carry the current identity, architecture, capability, persistence, effect, or responsibility claim.
Use A.1 and B.2 for the general holon and whole-reidentification decision. MDPE.24 supplies the Music-and-Dance
questions, observations, cases, and project consequences that make that general move useful in this field.
MDPE.24:2.1 - State the project consequence first
Name the decision that would change if a new whole were recognized. For example:
- whether to engineer one festival edition or an enduring festival-series System;
- whether to improve one school or work on a teaching-and-performance network spanning schools;
- whether to tune one publication channel or address a platform-mediated dance practice with its own memory and trend dynamics;
- whether to preserve individual records or maintain a living repertoire-and-performance whole;
- whether responsibility and assurance stay with local providers or must also address a separately identified coordinating System.
If both answers lead to the same Work, measure, authority, and boundary, defer the whole-reidentification question.
MDPE.24:2.2 - Name the existing whole and the candidate
Name the existing whole that currently carries the claim, its identity through change, and the parts or participants already recognized. Then name the candidate new whole without using only a genre, scene, school, or platform label.
For a choreo-camp case, the existing whole might be a broader commercial-dance teaching and performance scene. The candidate might be a persistent cross-city network constituted by recurring providers, teachers, learners, publication Systems, status relations, and linked Work. For an annual festival, the existing whole might be one edition produced by an organization; the candidate might be an enduring festival-series System with its own operation, memory, commitments, and identity across changing editions.
A chosen scale of description is not a world-side whole. A coarse-graining operation can summarize many lower states and reveal useful macrovariables, but the representation creates neither constituents nor part–whole relations. Ground the candidate in actual Systems or other admitted holons, constructive relations that exist, and the direct criterion for its proposed kind.
MDPE.24:2.3 - Look for Music-and-Dance whole-making relations
Use the following questions as probes, not as a score and not as a checklist that creates the answer:
| Probe | Music-or-Dance observation that could matter |
|---|---|
| Boundary | Participation, repertoire, performance, teaching, publication, or access relations distinguish the candidate from neighboring practices. |
| Constitutive relations | Recurring coordination, supervision, commitment, exchange, teaching, performance, or mediation relations hold the candidate together rather than merely connecting unrelated participants. |
| States at this scale | The candidate can be in materially different states such as expanding, fragmenting, canonizing, losing capability, changing repertoire, or changing circulation. |
| Memory | Embodied lineages, repertoires, curricula, archives, maintained instrument or software configurations, event arrangements, and recurring teaching, performance, maintenance, or handover Work can support later recovery after participant turnover. Name what present Agents actually use, in which Work, and what they recover. |
| Transitions | The candidate has identifiable changes among its states, not merely a sequence of lower-scale performances or publications. |
| Recognition and selection | Variants, teachers, performers, works, or Methods are amplified, suppressed, retained, or dropped through relations that obtain at the candidate boundary. |
| Downward effect | The candidate changes what performers train, what creators make, what teachers teach, what partners expect, or what events and media present. |
| Persistence and identity | The candidate remains identifiable across turnover of individual Agents, artifacts, events, venues, or trends under a stated reidentification rule. |
| Temporal scale | Its state and memory persist across enough lower-scale Work to matter to the project; “slower” is evidence only when the relation is observed. |
| Larger-assembly compatibility | The candidate has interfaces and identity conditions under which it can remain a constituent of a larger scene, discipline, organization, or cultural ecology. |
When an assignment is used as memory evidence, name the A.2.1 assignment species and direct predicate, its
actual participants and extent. Then name the separate, existing relation by which performed Work, a maintained
result, or another continuity-bearing contribution supports later recovery. An assignment, roster, archive, or
configuration record alone does not establish performed Work, recovery, or cultural memory.
No single row establishes a whole. A popular name can lack constitutive relations. An archive can supply memory but no current performance capability. A network can persist but remain only an exchange relation among existing organizations. A platform can select variants without becoming either the artistic practice or the whole that performs it.
MDPE.24:2.4 - Try the existing-whole explanation
Before enlarging the project, ask whether the observed novelty can be handled by a smaller repair:
- a performer or teacher developed a new capability;
- a Method or repertoire changed while the practice remained the same whole;
- an event series added a provider, venue, or publication System;
- a camera, judge, recommender, or market relation changed visibility or selection;
- a new archive or curriculum improved memory;
- measurement or recognition became more discriminating;
- an architecture view omitted an already existing relation.
When one of these explanations carries the current claim, keep the existing whole. Engineer the changed System, Method, capability, memory, or relation directly. Importance, novelty, synergy, complexity, or surprise does not force whole reidentification.
MDPE.24:2.5 - Reidentify only when the project needs the candidate whole
If the existing whole cannot carry the claim, apply the complete FPF holon criterion and the criterion for the candidate’s kind. State why the new whole, rather than its participants or a model of them, now carries the relevant boundary, architecture, capability, persistence, or effect claim.
Then change the project accordingly. Name the new EntityOfConcern, its boundary, constituents, interfaces, identity-through-change rule, architecture concerns, intended Work or capability, affected Agents and Systems, and the observations and responsibilities that now matter. Do not attribute agency, authority, goals, or Work to the new whole unless their own conditions obtain.
If evidence is missing, return an open result. Specify a feasible observation: follow whether a camp network persists after founding teachers leave; test whether its publications and teaching relations alter production in several cities; compare whether a festival series keeps commitments and capability across edition turnover; or observe whether a platform-mediated practice retains state and downward constraints after one trend ends.
MDPE.24:3 - First Useful Result
A project-boundary decision can be kept in this compact form:
- Decision affected: [what engineering, funding, maintenance, measurement, or responsibility changes].
- Existing whole: [the current EntityOfConcern and its identity-through-change rule].
- Candidate new whole: [the grounded candidate and proposed admitted kind].
- Observed change: [the world-side change that raised the question].
- Existing-whole explanations tried: [the smaller repairs that may carry the claim].
- Whole-making relations observed: [boundary, construction, states, memory, transitions, selection, persistence, downward effect, and larger-assembly fit as applicable].
- Decision: [keep existing whole / reidentify candidate whole / open].
- Project consequence: [changed boundary, architecture question, Work, measure, authority, or no change].
- Needed observation: [only when the result remains open].
- Reopen condition: [new construction, loss of persistence, changed identity rule, or contrary evidence].
The record describes a decision about actual wholes. It does not create either whole, make a label into a kind, or turn evidence and models into world-side construction.
MDPE.24:4 - Worked Cases
MDPE.24:4.1 - One choreo-camp versus a persistent network
One camp brings teachers and learners together, records classes, and publishes videos. That can be an event and a set of Work occurrences inside an existing dance scene. Visibility, international attendance, and repeated branding do not yet require a new whole.
A persistent network becomes a serious candidate when recurring teaching, travel, status, booking, publication, and learner-migration relations hold it together; it retains repertoire and memory across individual camps; teacher and phrase selection changes over time; and the network changes how dancers train and choreographers create material in several cities. The project then compares two practical choices: improve one event/provider, or treat the network’s boundary, architecture, persistence, access, and downward effects as the engineering subject. If persistence and cross-city effects are only asserted, the result stays open and names the observation.
MDPE.24:4.2 - A short-video platform and a dance practice
A recommendation algorithm, camera convention, or viral phrase can mediate visibility and selection without becoming a dance practice or cultural whole. Engineer the mediating System and relation when that explanation is enough.
A platform-mediated practice becomes a candidate new whole only if actual production, imitation, publication, recognition, trend memory, participant relations, and recurring selection form an identifiable boundary and persist beyond individual trends, while also changing lower-scale phrase construction and training. Even then, the software platform, the wider participant practice, and a particular style remain different candidates. The project must select which one carries its current claim.
MDPE.24:4.3 - Annual social-dance festival editions
One festival edition is bounded event Work. A continuing festival series may be an enduring System if it retains identity, commitments, providers, participant relations, memory, operating capability, and interfaces across changing editions and organizers. Recognizing the series changes Systems Engineering and Operations Management: the project now addresses the series’ architecture, recurrence capability, records, supplier and community relations, and failure modes rather than treating each edition as an isolated event.
If only the name and archive persist while no recurring organization, capability, commitment, or constructive relation obtains, keep the editions and records separate.
MDPE.24:4.4 - A new genre label
A label can coordinate discovery, criticism, teaching, marketing, or community talk. Use those relations directly. Do not infer a new whole until the candidate has grounded construction, identity, states, memory, transitions, selection, persistence, and project consequences that the existing-whole explanation cannot carry.
MDPE.24:5 - Checks and Common Repairs
| Check | Failure it prevents | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| A project decision changes | “New level” becomes academic classification. | Name the boundary, Work, measure, architecture, funding, maintenance, or responsibility that differs. |
| Existing whole is named first | Novelty erases the current EntityOfConcern. | State the existing whole and try smaller explanations before reidentification. |
| Candidate is grounded | A label, diagram, metric, archive, or macrovariable becomes the whole. | Name actual constituents, constructive relations, boundary, identity rule, and kind criterion. |
| Part–whole, scale, and coarse-graining stay distinct | A representation operation substitutes for world-side construction. | Use scale for the chosen description, coarse-graining for the model operation, and direct patterns for obtaining part–whole relations. |
| Music-and-Dance relations change the test | Generic emergence language hides the field problem. | Observe repertoire, performance, teaching, embodied memory, recognition, selection, circulation, and lower-scale production as the case requires. |
| Downward effects are observed | Influence is asserted from fame or correlation. | Name the relation and compare lower-scale Work under relevant conditions. |
| Persistence survives turnover | One event, creator, artifact, or trend becomes a level. | Observe identity and memory across turnover or keep the result open. |
| Kind and agency are not assumed | A network, scene, canon, or platform is treated as an acting System by grammar. | Apply the direct kind criterion; attribute Agent, authority, goal, capability, and Work only when their conditions obtain. |
MDPE.24:6 - Sources and Epistemic Boundaries
| Source or practice line | Contribution used here | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
A.1 — Recognize a Whole with Parts and B.2 — Whole Reidentification | General construction, identity, existing-whole comparison, and whole-reidentification requirements. | They do not supply the Music-and-Dance candidate relations, observations, cases, or project consequences. |
C.36 — Cultural Evolution and Cultural-Evolution Engineering | Separation of local intervention, cultural relations, new-whole claims, mediation, and distributed change. | A cultural-evolution case does not itself establish a new holon or authorize a project. |
| Music-and-Dance eco-evo-devo synthesis (unpublished source note) | Candidate-level probes: states, memory, transitions, selection, temporal persistence, and downward effects; music, dance, camp, and platform cases. | The transfer from multilevel-evolution models is a working hypothesis and does not replace FPF construction or kind criteria. |
| Vanchurin et al., Toward a theory of evolution as multilevel learning | A mathematical and theoretical source for multiscale learning-like dynamics. | A model scale, coarse-graining, or macrovariable is not by itself a world-side holon. |
| Czaplicka, Baumann, and Rahwan, algorithmic mediation and cumulative culture | A source for asking how algorithmic mediation changes cultural transmission and accumulation. | A modelled mediator or observed influence does not establish that the platform, practice, or style is a new whole. |
Reconsider the whole-reidentification decision if a domain study supplies a better discriminating observation. Use FPF and direct domain Methods when they already supply the complete result.
