RHY.10:4.3 - Choose how performers follow and adjust

Determine which information each performer uses for the current part of the passage. With a fixed recording, only the live performer can adjust that relationship. With mutually responsive partners, adjustments can be shared. Leadership may change at a phrase boundary or a signalled tempo change.

Make the arrangement understandable in practice: show the preparation, play or move the passage, and agree on the cue for a change where agreement is needed. Distinguish a cue announcing a new pace from a local expressive accent.

When corrections alternate or grow, compare a smaller correction, a clearer reference, or one temporarily stable contributor. Judge the combined response and retained phrasing. Do not assume that each performer correcting the full difference produces the fastest or most useful recovery.

A controller can implement explicit feedback gains. A performer may use learned adjustment without calculating them. Model parameters describe or prescribe a selected mechanism only under its assumptions; a fitted coefficient does not by itself identify the performer’s conscious rule.
