RHY.5:4.2 - Match the convention to the rhythmic content
Use the following contrasts to select a candidate family. They are possible resources, not steps to perform in sequence.
| Needed rhythmic operation | Candidate representation and what to retain |
|---|---|
| Locate an attack within a beat | A position-based syllable or subdivision grid; retain the beat, division and location convention. In Takadimi, the syllable identifies a contextual position rather than a note’s written duration. |
| Preserve sound classes in a cyclic percussion pattern | A convention that distinguishes the relevant articulations, with their cycle positions. In the dūm–tak account of an iqa‘, a notated prototype leaves ornamentation to the performing practice. |
| Work with a phrase while maintaining an independent cycle | A learned spoken phrase together with the cycle’s hand gestures, as in solkaṭṭu practice; retain the correspondence among phrase, gesture and performing technique. |
| Compare cyclic placements or transform a pattern | An ordered onset set or geometric representation; retain a distinguished origin when entry phase matters, and choose which transformations count as equivalent. |
| Inspect microtiming or continuous shaping | An appropriately captured sound, movement or time-varying trace with its reference and observation rule. A coarse grid may remain a companion, but cannot restore omitted detail. |
A family name does not determine a complete reading. Select the actual convention and enough instruction to use it. NOT.8 constructs the general reference, segmentation and reading procedure; the table identifies rhythmic distinctions that procedure must serve.
