RMP.8:4.4.1 - Make a research Method contribution recoverable across publication forms
Use this branch when the contribution includes a Method that another reader should understand, repeat, adapt or combine. First identify the knowledge contribution and the use to be supported; then choose how to present it.
A practitioner Method pattern is an episteme about a Method and its use. Its content includes the recurring difficulty, the situation in which that difficulty matters, competing forces, the solution and its grounds, worked applications, limits, consequences and relations. FPF’s SoTA-Echoing adds the comparison with the current best-known line and serious alternatives that can change the Method. These are substantive claims and explanations, not decorations around an operation list. Apply A.3.2 when claiming that an episteme is a U.MethodDescription; filling a pattern template does not establish that membership.
Keep that content distinct from its publication form: the selected section template, natural language, notation, reading order, file arrangement, medium and place of publication. Translation or moving text between files may preserve the contribution; omitting a force that changes the choice of solution may not. A short entry can direct a reader to the developed account, but cannot supply an explanation that the account never contains.
An article can present several connected claims and Methods, their construction, evidence and limits. Its contributions may be developed into one pattern, several related patterns, an amendment of an existing language, or another suitable knowledge product. A pattern language organizes substantive problem-solution relations; a DPF has its own field of practice, promised coverage and maintenance boundary. Neither is merely an article layout or a collection of files. Do not infer one article–one pattern or one article–one DPF. E.4.DPF selects the framework contribution when that architectural choice matters.
For a pattern contribution, check the recurring problem–conditions–remedy relation as well as whether a suitably prepared recipient can reproduce its use. State what makes another situation an instance of that problem, which parts of the way of acting recur, which adaptations are permitted, what preparation and support are needed, and what result would count as successful use. Applying the Method again may produce a different artifact or numerical value while preserving its intended effect under the stated conditions. Recomputing one reported number alone does not establish this reusable reach. A correctly recognized limit is a useful boundary result; it is not a successful reproduction of the promised positive effect.
For a Method contribution, make the following connections usable:
- Recover the construction. Explain the problem and frame, the objects and relations through which it is understood, the relevant forces and the resulting way of acting. Conceptual synthesis can combine, adapt or reinterpret already known Methods. Show both the horizontal organization—sequence, alternatives, feedback and returns—and the vertical relation between constituent actions and the larger Method where they change use. E.4.CM develops this composition; a bibliography of constituents does not establish their compatibility or supply missing joins.
- State what another reader is to repeat. Reconstructing a derivation, rerunning a computation on the same inputs, obtaining new measurements and applying the Method under changed conditions test different claims. Say what is held comparable, what changes, the result to compare and what agreement means. Exact equality may be warranted for a derivation or deterministic calculation; new measurements usually require a justified uncertainty or agreement criterion. Use RMP.6 for the relevant credibility decision and for interpretation of an actual return. The word “reproduction” alone does not choose the examination.
- Provide the consequential means. Supply or locate the definitions, assumptions, input preparation, reasoning, operations, data or material, comparison and interpretation needed for that examination. Specify versions, computational environment, randomization, calibration, timing or performer capability when a difference there can change the claim. For a reused Method, identify the usable source passage and the conditions supplied by it. A source title is insufficient when the reader still has to invent a missing operation. RMP.4 governs the actual trace; it cannot recover conduct for which no evidence survives.
- Choose and connect the presentations. An empirical article may separate question, Methods, results and interpretation; a theoretical or Methods article may center a construction and its argument; a protocol or Stage 1 Registered Report describes proposed work, while a later results report states what was actually done and obtained. Use the applicable venue and study-type reporting requirements. A pattern presentation organizes the same supported contribution around recurring use, including problem frame, forces, solution, cases, boundaries and SoTA. Preserve the reasoning and evidence needed for that use even when section names and order change.
- Expose what is available and what remains untested. Connect each presentation to the identifiable source contribution and the materials needed for its stated examination. State permitted access and consequential omissions. A protocol is not performed Work, an available artifact is not a successful rerun, and a repeatable calculation is not evidence for transfer of its model. Correct affected presentations and known receiving uses through 4.3–4.4 when their relied-on claims change.
Use the smallest explanation and access arrangement that supports the receiving use. A theoretical contribution need not invent an empirical dataset; protected participant material need not be made public contrary to its conditions of use. Conversely, a disclosure restriction can leave a particular public examination unavailable. State that limit rather than presenting the publication format as evidence of reproducibility.
