STR.8:4.4 - Compare a smaller complete increment

Ask whether one attainable change can make the required contribution possible while preserving current work. An access repair, a supported hand-back or a focused capability increment may be enough. Compare it with retaining the current arrangement, obtaining the contribution externally or changing the direction.

A small increment must reach a useful result. Installing half a platform is not an organization-capability increment merely because it is small. Conversely, a bounded improvement in how a team accepts and uses an existing result can be valuable without a new major project.

Include learning, supervision, integration, dual operation and exception handling in the demand when they are needed. STR.14 resolves conflicts among simultaneous work; this pattern identifies which contributions and conditions it must reconcile. Financial affordability and permitted action remain separate professional questions.
