STR.8:5.1 - SensorCo: a platform is not a service capability
In the constructed SensorCo case, integrated service could use the installed physical sensor platform and field-service knowledge. The existing device and service contracts can support current obligations for twelve months. The proposed service direction still depends on demand, complete delivery cost and permitted use.
The team follows one prospective contribution: receive a customer’s inspection question, obtain permitted observations, interpret them, supply the agreed answer and respond when the answer cannot be produced or accepted. Platform availability answers only part of that path.
Suppose the feasibility examination in this illustrative extension finds that the tool works, but the proposed service cannot yet name who covers incidents outside the ordinary support window. Replacing the tool would not answer that gap. The useful return is the required incident-support contribution and its cost, availability and responsible supplier. Dependent service commitments remain conditional; the four-day internal costing and trial-specification preparation can continue under its separate conditions.
The team also distinguishes three potential developments:
- An engineering change could make the platform supply a needed technical result.
- A participant may need practice and evidence of performance for a new interpretation task.
- The organization may need an effective path for accepting results and returning exceptions.
They may support the same service but do not become one development object. An attended course does not establish the organization’s support arrangement; an accepted engineering output does not establish the person’s transfer.
If a selected service design later needs organization realization, OCE.9 follows the whole contribution and its exception under the permitted conditions. If a particular person’s unfamiliar-task performance is the missing premise, HCD.12 answers that bounded question. The StrategyTeam does not commission both merely because both patterns exist.
