HCD.20:4 - Solution
HCD.20:4.1 - Fix what must survive the comparison
Name the personal contribution, later work, permissible help and critical errors. Identify any separately required shared product or team performance. If the purpose is responding to another person’s reasons, an isolated calculation exercise is not an equivalent comparator. If the purpose is performing a routine calculation reliably, extensive debate may add no required contribution.
Use actual preparation evidence for known people and conditional assumptions for a future audience. Distinguish insufficient subject preparation from unfamiliarity with the interaction. A learner may understand a model but not know how to request clarification or express an evidence-based objection; adding more subject explanation will not directly repair that interaction gap.
Retain a qualified individual or existing supported option as the baseline when it can serve the target. Describe what a group would add: otherwise unavailable evidence, an explanation to a recipient, another interpretation to challenge, a shared instrument, or coordinated action. If no consequential contribution is identifiable, stop with the simpler sufficient option.
HCD.20:4.2 - Derive different scales from the actual activity
Separate admission, immediate task groups, continuing relationships and provider assignment. Work from the action that needs capacity.
For sequential contributions, use an explicit time construction. If each of k participants needs r contributions of t minutes, and joint coordination needs c(k) minutes, the proposed activity requires at least k × r × t + c(k) within its window T. Include preparation or transitions elsewhere when they lie outside that window; include them here when they consume it. The inequality is a necessary capacity bound on the stated sequence, not a sufficient scheduling test or a law of ideal group size. A help visit also requires the learner and provider to be free together and the relevant inputs to be ready.
For a shared instrument, identify which actions require exclusive control and which can occur while someone else operates. Schedule the necessary personal turns and meaningful observer actions. For parallel annotation or drafting, inspect the later reading, comparison and integration burden: simultaneous writing does not make integration instantaneous.
Choose the smallest configuration that supplies the needed contributions without destroying the task’s purpose, then compare a serious alternative where a different configuration could improve the result or burden. A larger group may add a useful counterexample, and a smaller group may omit it. “Smallest” is conditional on contribution, not a universal objective.
An observation role must name an action: predict, measure, detect a violated condition, ask for a discriminating test or explain a change. Merely watching or recording attendance does not establish that action. If personal instrument manipulation is part of the target, observation does not eliminate the necessary later hands-on attempt.
HCD.20:4.3 - Make the proposed composition usable
Select membership differences for a task-related contribution, using obtainable information. Relevant prior knowledge can provide contrasting interpretations; compatible time windows make the interaction possible; permission to share material determines which case can be used. Diversity by a convenient score does not prove that participants will exchange or use useful grounds.
Estimate the help required to bridge the intended differences. A novice paired with an expert may receive modelling, but can also become a spectator. Assign a turn that elicits the novice’s needed judgement and make the expert’s response useful to it. A group of novices may require a qualified external check before its shared misconception becomes the lesson.
Agree the time, channel, contribution and response expected for the first actual contact. If a proposed member does not participate, restore the missing contribution, regroup on compatible conditions or preserve a viable individual route. An allocated name is not a contact event.
Retain a peer circle when familiarity supplies trust, context or useful continuing feedback. Change partners or admit a new participant when a new contribution is needed and the transition can be supported. Introduce the current problem, relevant work, permissions and decision still open; ask the group to use, adapt or reject the new contribution on its grounds. Counting a new idea’s arrival does not show that it changed the work.
Confidential material requires a permitted substitute that preserves the relevant relation, or qualified private help. An anonymized surface that removes the very condition to compare is not a usable substitute. Do not make disclosure of a real project a condition of access to a generally offered learning opportunity.
For a composition that must now be established or changed, HCD.21 develops the selection, actual contact and newcomer-use construction. Return its availability and coordination burden to this comparison. HCD.27 develops the personal entry and recovery windows when one common rhythm is unsuitable.
HCD.20:4.4 - Allocate the actions and assistance before counting savings
For each candidate, show which actions remain personal, which benefit from exchange, which produce a common result, and which require qualified provider judgement. HCD.22 develops the shared task. Other participants may identify an ambiguity or challenge an inference; they do not acquire the authority or competence of a subject assessor by receiving the role title.
Choose when others’ solutions become visible and whether earlier personal work remains available. These are different decisions from membership. A private first attempt can preserve an initial judgement where that judgement matters. A demonstration can legitimately precede practice where the learner does not yet have a usable method. Do not impose unsupported independent search as a ritual.
Use HCD.7 for the actual support contributions. Distinguish subject help, facilitation, material preparation, technical assistance and assessment. One person can provide several contributions if qualified and available; the overlapping workload still counts. Use HCD.8 for a particular missing contribution.
AI may supply a contrast, draft feedback or suggest a tutor move when its result can be qualified and used. Count preparation, choice, checking, correction and fallback. If learning to judge is part of the target, a generated judgement does not perform the learner’s operation. If AI supports an experienced mentor, retain the mentor’s subject competence and ability to reject an unsuitable suggestion.
HCD.20:4.5 - Compare full effort and the time of use
Compare candidates on the same intended result and observation conditions. Include:
- learner preparation, personal attempts, exchange, reading others’ work, correction and recovery;
- author and provider preparation, qualification, facilitation, subject help and individual checking;
- coordination, channel and equipment access, permitted-material preparation and re-entry;
- waiting and peak demand, reserve capacity and work displaced elsewhere.
Count a shared expense once and recurring expenses where they occur. Keep learner time, specialist time, elapsed time and financial expenditure visible rather than collapsing them into an unqualified score. State which values are estimates and which come from operation.
Inspect the most demanding plausible window on one timeline for both participants and providers. Place each action after the information it needs; mark the personal or shared action during which help can actually be used. Count simultaneous actions together only when the same person can perform them compatibly. Assign visits to individual providers, allowing their preparation, movement or connection, and leave enough time for the learner to use the response. Queuing a question is viable only while that dependent action can still occur. A nominal reserve must have the competence, permission and availability to supply the missing contribution.
When scaling the cohort, recompute the number of task groups and the relevant recurrent work. A mentor-to-learner ratio can summarize a particular arrangement; it cannot replace the task and window calculation. Unexpected absence or retries may change the result before another enrolment does.
HCD.20:4.6 - Preserve interpretable observations and revise the right object
Before use, identify what would show that the planned actions happened and what would show the personal contribution under its intended help. A common report, observation note or explanation can be useful evidence for a bounded question. It does not automatically establish the same contribution for silent members.
Use HCD.11–13 only for the personal performance, changed-condition or delay question they can support. If team capability is the target, inspect the team’s integrated work through its appropriate owner. If a material or provider is the object, use the corresponding material or operating observation. Separate dissatisfaction, absence, inaccessible support and unsuccessful learning rather than explaining all four by motivation.
A useful pilot can expose an infeasible window, an unused contribution or a task that one person completes for the rest. That is enough to revise the affected construction. A causal comparison of arrangements needs a qualified research design that handles shared exposure, between-person influence, provider differences, attrition and the intended observation horizon.
Return the compared options, surviving constraints, unsupported assumptions and next useful decision. Reopen only the affected dimensions when task, entrants, contact, resource or evidence changes.
