RHY.14:4.2 - Match events without concealing omissions or additions

For an event-based comparison, identify the intended passage, cycle position and event kind. Match observed events to the intended events under a rule appropriate to that passage. Preserve allowed ornament, expressive displacement and ambiguity rather than forcing every observation onto the nearest grid point.

Keep unmatched expected events, unmatched observed events and uncertain matches visible. If one event is missed, pairing the remaining events merely by list position can shift all later matches. Return to the recording, event identity or a justified alignment procedure when this changes the comparison.

Within an established match, compare the observed location with the intended location, including any deliberate offset. A signed difference indicates earlier or later placement; its absolute value answers an unsigned-deviation question. Successive intervals and differences across the passage can distinguish a stable offset from drift. Summaries remain attached to the matched events and any unresolved locations.

Before judging a performer from a detector result, inspect the event identifications that could reverse the choice. A quiet attack, echo or changing sound envelope may change detection. Use the recording or another adequate observation for that bounded question; manual correction is not licence to remove inconvenient performed events.

When observations come from different devices, use RHY.4’s common-reference and delay treatment. If uncertain recording delay could account for the alleged error, retain that uncertainty rather than assigning it to the performer.
