DOCA.7:4 - Solution
Agree the development-advice question and the conditions under which the adviser can responsibly answer it. Keep the boundary proportional to the use and consequence.
DOCA.7:4.1 - Identify the actual relationship and receiving use
Use PSD.1 — Bound the Decision-Support Engagement and Authority Boundary to recover an adequate engagement question or its exact missing value. State whose development is under consideration, what later contribution or decision the advice serves, the horizon, and the return sought now.
Distinguish the recommending performer from the recipient at the grain of this engagement. Naming one self-directing actor twice does not establish the distinct advising relation used here. A recipient may also be the choice owner when that authority is supported. An organizational team can receive advice from a separate internal specialist without appointing an external consultant.
Identify the client, sponsor, developing subject, recipient, and choice owner separately where their differences change service, disclosure, protection, or action. One person may occupy several positions. State the relevant coincidence rather than inferring it from a job title, contract signature, or payment.
A useful question might be: “For Mira’s own development choice over four months, help her compare directions for contributing to cross-disciplinary review; her employer’s later assignment decision remains separate.” If no recipient or receiving use can be identified, return that gap or the direct inquiry instead of inventing an advice engagement.
DOCA.7:4.2 - Bound the service by competence and applicable duties
Agree what assistance is being offered and excluded. Distinguish development-direction advice from assessment, teaching, psychotherapy, recruitment, sales, programme design, and implementation when confusion would change what the client receives. A referral or a smaller service may be the correct result.
Determine the professional and local requirements that actually apply to this service, jurisdiction, and client relationship. Use their competent interpretation when applicability is uncertain. A professional code cited in this pattern establishes neither a licence nor every local duty. Do not assert assessment competence, legal authority, or a client’s capacity from an adviser title or a signed form.
Ask what the adviser can judge and which specialist results bear the requested claim. Use A.15.9 for a missing human-development, organizational, technical, safety, legal, financial, or other bounded result; reuse an adequate current one. Retain the advice supported now and its material limit; a missing result becomes a request only when A.15.9 and C.11.DUA select its obtainable contribution against the whole acquisition burden. The supplying practice retains its Method and conclusion. Coordinating a career or organization question does not transfer those competences to the adviser.
For human career services, the applicable professional basis may require informed participation, competent assessment and interpretation, and appropriate referral or closure. NCDA’s 2024 Code of Ethics, A.2, A.10, and E.2 supplies that bounded line. Apply it within its professional scope; obtain qualified help for consent or capacity questions that the adviser cannot resolve.
DOCA.7:4.3 - Agree participation, information use, and disclosure
Make the service and its limits understandable to the person whose participation is required. Establish the applicable consent or other legitimate participation basis, what information will be obtained, its intended use, who may receive it, and relevant confidentiality limits. Keep voluntary participation, mandated service, assent, and authority to act for another person distinct when the case requires them.
Specify what the sponsor receives and what remains within the advising relationship. Do not promise unconditional secrecy where applicable duties require disclosure, or assume that payment permits disclosure. A change in purpose or audience requires its own applicable basis; an earlier agreement does not silently cover every later use.
Use only the information needed for the bounded service. If a decisive premise cannot be disclosed to a recipient, explain the resulting reliance restriction without exposing the protected content. A qualified summary may support a bounded return without releasing raw assessment material. If the permissible explanation cannot support the requested reliance, return the narrower question or blocker; do not ask the recipient to treat an unexplained preference as a warranted recommendation.
When the client declines an optional assessment or service, explain the resulting scope and limits without converting refusal into an adverse factual judgement about capability. Follow any actual professional or legal duties that remain; the declined step is not permission to improvise the missing result.
DOCA.7:4.4 - Treat conflicts before relying on the advice
Identify material financial, provider, employment, organizational, or other interests that can distort the requested service. Make their treatment explicit under the applicable relationship: disclosure, changed scope, independent assessment, recusal, referral, or another qualified response.
Disclosure alone may not make an incompatible engagement acceptable. A sponsor’s instruction to conceal a material interest or exclude a serious alternative can block the requested independent comparison. Return that service limitation; do not disguise it as a technical inferiority of the excluded direction.
For management consulting, ICMCI’s competence framework v4.0, C.1.1–2, C.2.1, and E.3.5 supplies bounded engagement, client-involvement, and conflict-disclosure guidance. These identified clauses inform the relationship question; the actual applicable professional requirements govern this service.
Preserve an independently qualified domain result within its established scope when a relationship conflict changes who may advise or how the result may be used.
DOCA.7:4.5 - Distinguish AI assistance from an AI development subject
If AI assists the adviser, establish the permitted use of client information and the responsible professional’s review of the resulting content. Within the ICMCI AI Code v1.0, May 2026, sections 1.2, 2.2, 3.1–3.4, 5, and 7, professional responsibility remains with the consultant; material AI use and its limits require appropriate client communication. An unverified generated answer supplies no specialist warrant.
If AI is instead the developing subject, identify the model, scaffold, tools, allocation, or composite arrangement being changed and its receiving environment. The recipient and choice owner are separate questions. A human learning result does not qualify a model change; use the relevant AI, engineering, operating, and governance results through A.15.9.
Both situations can occur in one engagement. Keep the adviser’s use of AI, the proposed change to the subject, and the human client’s professional protections separate.
DOCA.7:4.6 - Enter at the missing substantive result
Once the service boundary is adequate, identify what answer is still needed. Reuse current opportunity, characterization, reachability, and comparison results that cover this subject, configuration, use, and horizon.
If the receiving contribution or direction is unsettled, use the relevant construction pattern. If adequate directions exist, enter the actual PSD alternatives, comparison, or recommendation question directly. PSD.2–PSD.7 become relevant only when participants, formulations, scope, models, Method choice, or facilitation can change the return; a formed question needs no workshop as an entry fee.
Use DOCA.5 for a missing joint-reachability result and A.15.9 for an exact external premise. A service may be admissible while the evidence supports only a conditional set, request, or blocker. Keep the scope local: a missing provider comparison can block ranking all directions while an independent human-development result remains usable.
PSD.13 supplies the bounded recommendation when that question is current. The later authorized direction choice, HCD.2 programme comparison, optional programme recommendation, authorized programme choice, and Learning Product Guide remain distinct. An existing programme-level comparison can be used directly for its programme question.
DOCA.7:4.7 - Return the boundary and preserve actual closure duties
Lead with what can be offered now and the most important condition. A two-sentence result can be sufficient:
We can help Mira compare review-development directions for her own four-month choice; the employer receives only the agreed service summary, not her private assessment material. A recommendation remains conditional on the missing representative-practice and transfer results, while the employer retains its separate assignment decision.
If the relationship cannot responsibly supply the requested service, return the exact mandate, competence, consent, conflict, disclosure, or other blocker and the appropriate next receiver. State what limited independent help remains possible, if any. Do not infer that a service blocker proves the subject has no worthwhile development direction.
Fit the eventual explanation to the recipient’s use. PSD.13 and the applicable receiving-use guidance govern making the recommendation intelligible; persuasion to accept it is a different purpose. Delivery alone establishes neither understanding nor consent, choice, implementation, or effectiveness.
A completed recommendation application does not cancel duties arising from an actual professional relationship. Contact, referral, confidentiality, protection, and service closure continue only as their governing basis requires. If follow-up is needed, use PSD.14 for a feasible observation and return arrangement; a date in the report creates no staffed service. Reopen the affected engagement condition when the recipient, purpose, competence, conflict, information use, or professional basis changes.
Recognition and assurance. The reader can recognize a bounded engagement from the recipient, developing subject, adviser, use, horizon, service limits, and retained choice. Assurance requires the actual competence, participation, protection, reliance, and authority basis relevant to that use. A clear account is not evidence that those conditions obtain.
