Preface

Edition: First edition, version 3 October 2026. The source-use account states the qualification dates and limits of the methodological contributions.

Research Method Practice can begin before a study or with supplied material and a claim. A current source answer may already be enough. Otherwise the practitioner may need a research-allocation answer, a question-preserving operational choice, an inspectable trace, an analysis of what the material supports, a useful credibility examination, a corpus answer, a precise knowledge revision or a decision about retaining or improving a research Method.

RMP.1 and RMP.2 form the pre-study contribution: qualify the question or return its source/owner answer, then use sufficient evidence, select a worthwhile design, return a true hold or complete a no-new-study answer. RMP.3 makes a selected design executable without replacing its question. RMP.4 preserves or recovers actual material for a declared examination. RMP.5 analyzes and criticizes the claim under its Method; RMP.6 decides which further credibility contribution, if any, should be obtained. RMP.7 appraises and synthesizes a corpus under its research question; RMP.8 revises the exact claim or model contribution and returns it to its actual use. RMP.9 distinguishes a Method difficulty from a limited correction, selects useful further comparison when warranted and returns its actual consequences. The nine Methods keep intention, conduct, claim support, acquisition, Method qualification and receiving authority distinct.

RMP.Preface:1 - The practical question behind research and engineering

A reliability engineer may need to change a pump’s maintenance interval, while a resident group may need to explain a stream anomaly. Both can reach the same difficulty: the answer needed for the next decision is uncertain, and the team does not yet know whether to retrieve an existing answer, apply a qualified Method, or design an inquiry. RMP.1/RMP.2 help the practitioner produce that first discriminating result. A bounded question or an exact return is useful before anyone commits to a study.

The distinction between research and engineering concerns the contribution being made. Engineering work can change a system so that it produces an intended result. Research work can change the account of what obtains, why it happens, or under which conditions a claim is defensible. One practitioner or team can make both contributions, and a research inquiry can require engineering an instrument or experimental arrangement. In the seal case, the engineered test arrangement and the resulting mechanism-to-evidence claim answer different questions. The maintenance decision then uses the claim together with the receiver’s other criteria. Calling all three contributions “research” would hide which result is still missing.

Science also names a social institution: organizations, occupations, careers, funding, journals and recognition. Those arrangements can enable inquiry and impose obligations. Their presence does not establish which Method can answer the question or whether the resulting claim survives criticism. A university team can perform routine qualification; a citizen group can develop a criticism-bearing question. RMP.1 therefore asks what knowledge remains unresolved, how the whole inquiry can change its support and what criticism it requires. It does not settle the philosophy of every practice called science or replace the professional Methods and criteria of every research field.

The practical gain is a better next move: use the supplied answer, obtain an ordinary professional result, qualify a question, choose a defensible design, specify its operations, recover actual material, state the bounded claim, select relevant credibility work, synthesize compatible contributions, revise and return a knowledge account, or retain or improve a research Method. Each contribution can instead identify the particular missing result or changed premise. A request to “prove that the change works” may become a question about whether the relevant mechanism transfers—or return to routine engineering if that relation is already qualified. A later operational choice must preserve that question; a retained trace cannot compensate for losing its decisive comparison.

RMP.Preface:2 - Forces that shape the first result

Working tensionHow it changes use of this repertoire
The receiver needs an answer soon, but a weak source frame can create false closure.Start with a question-relative source result and an explicit useful stop. Seek a stronger comparison when an omitted rival or limit could change the answer and the attainable contribution warrants its whole burden.
A familiar instrument or Method makes work easier to organize, but it can hide the error that matters.Establish the criticism demand before selecting a design; compare the different evidence relations of serious alternatives.
A team needs direction before every detail is settled, but a missing value may invalidate the proposed study.Select a design only when remaining values preserve its family, criticism and feasibility. If a still-needed selection is prevented, name the missing owner result; a current allocation may instead finish with a qualified no-new-study answer.
Combining methods can answer a richer question, but it consumes shared resources and creates an additional integration claim.Check the complete combination’s feasibility and disagreement logic, including demands that no pair of components reveals.
Research should be usable across institutional settings, but access, competence, safety, rights, and responsibility still differ.Apply the same membership conditions while obtaining the actual permissions, specialist results, and constraints for the setting.
The desired action gives the inquiry a use, but can also capture its conclusion.Preserve a result that can defeat or narrow the favored claim and a receiver who retains the later decision.
A protocol needs specific choices, but some inquiry develops through engagement with its material.State justified advance commitments, permit method-appropriate evolution, and preserve the reasons and timing of consequential changes.
Later criticism needs records, but exhaustive capture can hide decisive choices or expose protected information.Preserve the material needed for the named examination, establish actual permitted access, and state which uses loss or redaction prevents.

RMP.Preface:3 - Research membership is not institutional status

Research can be performed in a company, public body, university, archive, community, independent practice or citizen group. Affiliation, grant, venue, publication intent, title or tool use is neither necessary nor sufficient. The boundary depends on a knowledge question unresolved in the qualified frame, a non-routine epistemic task of the whole inquiry under genuine uncertainty, a criticism-ready trace and a bounded communicable contribution. A constituent action or the execution of an already justified protocol may be routine within that inquiry.

The same activity can sit on either side. A seal test can be routine qualification or a challenge to the relation that makes acceleration relevant. A fully specified replication can examine a disputed claim without inventing a new protocol. In RMP.1’s paired assay case, the same procedure instead supports ordinary quality control when the task is to return a lot verdict under an accepted rule. Stream sampling can be monitoring or an inquiry into rival causes; source reading can answer the question or contribute to a source-critical design.

RMP.Preface:4 - Question, frame, design, Work, result, and decision remain distinct

A receiving question names why knowledge may matter. A ResearchQuestionBrief states the intended episteme change, current frame, bounded question, criticism demand and constraints. It distinguishes what the evidence must establish for an adequate answer from when the present work may finish with uncertainty, refusal or a missing-input return. A research design is a prospective strategy connecting that question to observations or sources and method-appropriate criticism. A protocol or operationalization map elaborates a design. Performed Work, records, analysis output, criticism, a warranted episteme change, publication, recognition, and actual downstream use are further distinct.

RMP.1/RMP.2 supply the brief and current design disposition; RMP.3 supplies operational specification or an exact return; RMP.4 supplies the trace and its receiving limits; RMP.5 supplies the bounded claim and actual criticism; RMP.6 supplies the credibility choice and interprets an actual test return when one exists. RMP.7 supplies EvidenceSynthesis; RMP.8 supplies EpistemeChangeAndEvidenceReturn; RMP.9 supplies ResearchMethodPracticeRevision, including supported retention or a bounded correction. These names require the relevant content, not a new file for each result. A protocol remains an intention, and a trace represents only conduct supported by its records. Later conduct needs actual performance and its evidence. Domain claims need their qualified support, and the receiving practice retains study permission and its engineering, management, policy, regulatory or personal decision.

A Method pattern is a knowledge account of a Method and its use: the recurring problem and its frame, forces, solution, grounds, cases, limits, consequences and relations belong to its content, including FPF’s SoTA comparison. The section template, natural language, notation, file organization and publication location concern how that content is presented. A pattern language additionally organizes substantive relations among its contributions; a DPF is not merely a document format. One article can develop several related contributions, and one contribution can be explained in an article and in a pattern account without erasing the distinctions between their uses. RMP.8:4.4.1 explains how to preserve the content and means needed to repeat or adapt it.

RMP.Preface:5 - Criticism comes before method prestige

A design must first explain how its material can answer the question. Reuse a justified strategy when available. Otherwise RMP.2 applies C.39: derive the distinction the answer needs, recover an actual methodological operation, follow it on available material and construct the missing connection. A failed comparison can change the observation, arrangement or question, or return a precise missing result. The resulting strategy is then compared with the actual alternatives and no new study.

Experimental, field/observational, qualitative/reflexive, historical/source-critical, computational/model, synthesis, and mixed designs expose unlike errors. No family is a universal successor or top rung. RMP.2 asks which relation can expose the live rival, dependence, invalid source use, bias, context loss, or unsupported transfer and what would defeat or narrow the claim.

Real answer-changing alternatives make method capture visible; a numerical quota can invent false alternatives. A missing input holds a particular selection still needed when plausible values change its family, criticism or feasibility. A completed allocation can instead retain that unknown as a limitation of QualifiedNoNewStudy. Obtaining it is a separate commitment. A genuinely post-selection need preserves the selected relation across its full admitted range and the jointly admissible combinations.

RMP.Preface:6 - Pattern relations do not prescribe a research lifecycle

RMP.1 → RMP.2 is a result dependency only when a passing ResearchQuestionBrief and compatible current frame exist. RMP.2 can be entered directly with those supplied inputs. Either pattern can stop. A changed receiving question or frame returns to RMP.1; a changed selection premise reopens RMP.2.

RMP.3 can consume a compatible supplied brief and selected design. RMP.4 can preserve records before operationalization is complete or start directly from inherited work. RMP.5 can examine supplied material and analysis; RMP.6 can enter with a bounded claim and threat before or after new study work. Actual material or criticism can reopen a question, design or operation. The Table of Contents exposes RMP.1–RMP.9 in five reading Parts; neither Part order nor numbering is a research calendar. RMP.7 can enter from a supplied synthesis question, design and trace; RMP.8 can enter from an actual analysis, criticism or synthesis result. RMP.9 can enter from actual performance, criticism or a changed receiving use. Its result reopens only the dependent research contribution; a completed inquiry need not start Method improvement.

RMP.Preface:7 - Use the two contributions together

RMP.1/RMP.2 supply two related Methods for a bounded pre-study use. RMP.1 qualifies why an inquiry is needed and what answer would be enough. RMP.2 decides whether current evidence already suffices, which design can answer the qualified question, or which missing result prevents that choice. Their combination is useful when a request arrives before either question has been settled. A current allocation can also finish with insufficient evidence and no new study when no worthwhile obtainable acquisition is selected. Direct use of either contribution remains possible under its stated inputs.

For an ambiguous request, begin with the RMP.1 qualification procedure. Its source, ordinary-practice, and missing-input returns can close the current request without design work. Only a passing ResearchQuestionBrief carries the intended episteme change, criticism demand, and useful stop into RMP.2. A colleague’s compatible brief can supply the same input; repeating RMP.1 merely to record passage adds no result.

With that input, use the RMP.2 design comparison. Keep the receiving question fixed while alternatives change the evidence relation. The useful contrast might be between a mechanism experiment and field transfer evidence, between historical source criticism and corpus synthesis, or between new evidence and a sufficient current answer. The selected design must explain what error it can expose and which threats it leaves live. The four disposition branches then give the reader a usable conclusion.

The source-answer and design-allocation questions remain distinct. RMP.1 can finish with an available answer before unused membership prompts. RMP.2 compares qualified evidence with the brief’s answer condition without repeating adequate source work. Permission to finish with uncertainty does not satisfy that evidence condition. EvidenceSufficientStop means the answer is adequate for that use; QualifiedNoNewStudy means no new study is selected while the remaining evidence limit stays visible.

If design comparison changes the question, receiving use, or useful stop, return that change to RMP.1. If it changes only an instrument, access, or other selection premise, reopen the affected RMP.2 comparison. A usable question can survive an infeasible preferred design. A supplied-answer stop or hold can likewise be the complete result of the present use. The Part that groups these bodies helps reading; it adds no third Method and requires no chronological research lifecycle.

RMP.Preface:8 - Connect operationalization and actual trace

With a selected design, begin RMP.3 from one consequential observation or source choice. Explain how it bears on the bounded question, then specify the necessary units, selection, comparison, timing, Method and planned use of the material. A qualified domain protocol can supply much of this. The research contribution is the connection and the change condition, not another mandatory form.

The resulting ResearchProtocolAndOperationalizationMap makes clear what is executable and what remains blocked. A missing result may hold one operation while all admitted values preserve the selected design. A changed measure, source or comparison that can defeat the selected criticism returns to RMP.2. A changed question or useful stop returns to RMP.1. Apply those returns to the complete operational arrangement, including joint access, resource and retention conditions.

Use RMP.4 to capture the material whose loss would matter and to recover what actual work can support. Preserve plans separately from actual conduct, later reports and reconstruction. Connect observations, sources and computations to their uses through consequential selection and transformation. State what was known when a change was made, including substantial human and AI contributions.

A trace can be prepared before a final claim exists for the criticism or analysis already intended. It can also start from inherited work. A reconstructed plan remains a reconstruction, and a new run remains new work. For a named examination, determine what the intended critic can actually inspect; controlled originals, public summaries and irrecoverable losses support different uses.

One notebook may carry both the operational choices and the trace. Keeping their meanings distinct allows a reader to compare intention with conduct without multiplying documents. The next result may be an analysis-ready source set for its particular Method, or an honest account that the original comparison cannot be performed. RMP.5 supplies the research analysis and claim criticism, and RMP.6 the credibility choice, with their disciplinary inputs. RMP.7 supplies corpus synthesis when a qualified synthesis question, design and adequate actual material exist.

RMP.Preface:9 - Connect analysis and the credibility choice

Use RMP.5 to follow a consequential connection from the actual material through its Method to the proposed claim. An adequate existing analysis can supply the result. Preserve the distinction between planned and later choices, contrary material, uncertainty and the stronger claim the result cannot support. A bounded interpretation or unresolved answer may finish the present use.

Use RMP.6 when a remaining credibility question can change the useful next move. Start directly with the supplied claim, basis, use and threat. Reproduction, replication, robustness, use-specific validation, corroboration and transfer examine different relations. Compare what the attainable result could change with access, preparation, performance, interpretation, protection, shared resources and displaced work.

The selected test, its operational specification and an actual returned result remain separate. Inability to attempt an examination is not a discrepant result; an inconclusive result is not evidence of absence. A current no-new-test answer retains its uncertainty, and a newly obtainable discriminating comparison can reopen the choice. The protected-function merits of a disputed requirement and the authority to amend its current force also remain distinct.

RMP.Preface:10 - Connect corpus synthesis and exact revision

Use RMP.7 when the question concerns what a corpus jointly establishes. First inspect whether a supplied synthesis already answers it. Otherwise recover the reports, underlying studies or sources, their dependence, exclusions and missing contributions. The question and applicable Method determine whether to pool estimates, compare results without an aggregate, develop an interpretation, reconcile historical accounts or relate mixed findings.

A synthesis preserves useful differences. Two reports from one study may add information without adding independent support. A shared theme can remain situated rather than becoming a population percentage. A refusal to estimate a common magnitude can finish when it says what the corpus does and does not establish.

Use RMP.8 when that result or an individual analysis changes a wider claim, model or actual receiving use. Identify the same subject and conditions on both sides, retain the supported part and reconcile the affected dependent claims. A date for a decision does not by itself explain the later implementation. An unsupported field-transfer premise can invalidate a model’s field prediction while leaving its laboratory relation usable.

Return the current answer with the basis, uncertainty and limitation that changes reliance. Known consequential uses need the permitted correction through their responsible owner. A short linked explanation may suffice; neither an unused change form nor a general consumer register is required. A worthwhile new research possibility remains a separate question of attainable contribution and whole burden.

For a contribution that includes a reusable Method, use RMP.8’s publication branch to distinguish the supported knowledge from its article, pattern or framework presentation. Reconstructing a derivation, rerunning a calculation, obtaining new measurements and transferring the Method require different means and agreement criteria. The calibration case shows what remains unchanged across publications and what a shortened account must not lose.

RMP.Preface:11 - Connect Method improvement and research consequences

Use RMP.9 when a research Method or its practice becomes the actual question. First distinguish the Method from its description, implementation, local execution, capability and affected claim. An adequate current Method can be retained, and a determinate correction can finish after its relevant verification.

When a material choice remains open, compare attainable alternatives for the same research purpose and the criticism it must withstand. Obtain further evidence only when its possible results can change that choice and its complete burden is warranted. Otherwise retain the supported position and restrict any unsupported use. A decision to decline a comparison does not qualify the Method.

A corrected analysis can return through RMP.5/RMP.8 while a wider Method question remains open. A Method change can instead reopen an operational choice, credibility claim or synthesis contribution. Keep the actual dependency and unaffected results visible. New research still needs the RMP.1 membership conditions; Method improvement does not prescribe a ninth stage after every study.

The relevant Method Engineering contributions supply reusable identity, trial, fit, worth, variant and introduction distinctions. RMP.9’s source account connects these to research practice. ME.14 permits an adequate present choice or a retained set with its limitation; further inquiry depends on its useful obtainable contribution and whole burden. RMP.9 applies those distinctions to the research question and its affected result. A sufficient research account can carry the decision without a separate ME.14 record.

RMP.Preface:12 - Conditions for a usable combined result

Use one receiving question, intended episteme change, and useful stop across the combination. The source frame, rival accounts, applicability envelope, and supplied owner results must be compatible with that same use. Two locally plausible results cannot be combined when, for example, the brief concerns field seal degradation but the design comparison quietly assumes a different material or temperature mechanism. Requalify the changed question or obtain the missing relation before treating the design as its answer.

Feasibility concerns the whole selected strategy. For a mixed design, RMP.2’s family comparison requires a reason for each component and a warranted relation among its results. Check shared participant burden, access windows, specialist capacity, resources, and incompatibilities over the same intended period. Define what a component’s failure or disagreement would do to the claim. An extra component earns its place by the uncertainty it can change; agreement produced by shared data or assumptions is not independent corroboration merely because two Methods were named.

Consider a constructed mixed inquiry into the stream anomaly. The same qualified investigator pool has twelve available investigator-days in the relevant window. Field comparison requires six, archival/source comparison five, and a computational sensitivity component four; assume these demands cannot overlap or share effort. Every pair fits, but all three need fifteen days. If all three are necessary for the proposed criticism, the whole option is infeasible with the supplied twelve-day capacity. Compare a feasible worthwhile arrangement or finish the current allocation with no new study and the evidence limitation retained. Additional capacity is an option to appraise, not an automatic acquisition. Removing one component changes the design whenever it removes a necessary challenge. Lack of capacity does not establish that the current evidence is sufficient.

If a capacity result remains necessary to select a useful strategy and its plausible values would change that choice, RMP.2 returns ResearchDesignHold. When the current allocation instead finishes with no new study, retain the unresolved capacity as a limitation rather than an awaited acquisition. When several owner results remain unresolved, apply RMP.2’s joint-input test in RMP.2:4.3 before treating the remaining needs as PostSelectionNeed. The RMP.2 result rule supplies the required record and the action when a value arrives outside the admitted range.

These conditions first qualify the selected design and then constrain its operationalization. RMP.3 applies the same joint-input condition to the proposed conduct; RMP.4 preserves the actual choices and changes. Neither a completed protocol nor an extensive trace rescues a lost comparison or unsupported measurement relation. Preserve the completed question/design and unaffected material, identify the failed dependency, and return it to its owner. Competent execution and actual analysis require their own Methods and results. RMP.5 and RMP.6 can use the supported material to return a bounded claim and credibility decision; RMP.7/RMP.8 supply synthesis and broader revision when needed; RMP.9 addresses a distinct Method difficulty and returns only its actual consequences.

Constituent actions in ongoing work. During a study, classifying one observation can constitute part of constructing the analytical comparison, within an ongoing inquiry into a stated explanation. If the inquiry changes from describing recorded cases to explaining their occurrence, a classification that ignores how cases were selected may no longer support it. Recording skill and statistical calculation can both be available while the intermediate operationalization is inadequate. RMP.3 addresses that operationalization; the design and analysis Methods retain their own questions. Recover the vertical with B.1.5.EW and account for the access, specialist capability and shared observation burden needed by the combined work. Earlier collection is not assumed to continue during every later calculation.

RMP.Preface:13 - Architectural Rationale

The question/design Part follows two decisions that practitioners can complete separately: whether a new inquiry is needed, and which strategy could answer its qualified question. Combining the Methods preserves continuity between them without forcing every request through a study. Separating their results also makes revision precise: a new source can close the question; an invalid sensor can reopen design while the question remains useful.

Serious alternativeWhy someone would choose itTrade-off and when it is preferable
Use FPF source/evidence practice and direct methodological sources without an RMP account. It avoids another language and gives an experienced practitioner the original source detail.Prefer it when an existing source result or qualified domain Method already supplies the required answer. When the boundary and design are both unresolved, the practitioner must reconstruct their connection, stop logic, and owner returns; RMP.1/RMP.2 make that recurring work explicit.
Organize the entry by institution, occupation, or familiar activity. It is quick for administration and fits established service boundaries.Keep it for staffing, grant, or institutional classification questions. It cannot distinguish routine laboratory qualification from a mechanism inquiry, or admit the equivalent citizen question, so it does not govern RMP membership.
Use one standard design hierarchy or fixed research sequence.A mature domain can make recurring choices efficiently when the question, criteria, and evidence relation are already qualified.Use that domain rule for its justified scope. Across the questions served here it can suppress source criticism, situated interpretation, transfer limits, and legitimate stops. RMP.2 compares the actual criticism and losses before adopting the domain’s preferred route.
Use one combined question-and-design template. It reduces handoffs and can work for a short, stable inquiry with all inputs supplied. It can conceal a changed question inside a familiar protocol. RMP.1/RMP.2 keep the two results distinguishable even when one person creates them in one sitting; direct entry avoids making two documents compulsory.
Stop the published repertoire after question qualification alone.RMP.1 already avoids unnecessary studies and returns adjacent work correctly. It leaves a passing brief without the justified design-or-stop result needed by the seal and stream users. The second Method closes that pre-study question, including an explicit hold when selection cannot be completed.
Stop the repertoire at question and design. It gives a complete pre-study disposition without a larger research account.Use RMP.1/RMP.2 directly when that is the result needed. A selected design does not itself connect the detailed operational choices or preserve actual conduct; RMP.3/RMP.4 address those additional difficulties.
Combine protocol and trace into one undifferentiated result.A small inquiry may use one notebook, reducing paperwork.Keep that single carrier when useful, but distinguish intended choices from actual and reconstructed conduct. The distinction permits direct legacy entry and criticism of changes.
Use a comprehensive disciplinary handbook. It can supply detailed professional techniques, instruments and qualified procedures for a known field.Use that source for its actual contribution. RMP’s nine Methods connect the research question, evidence and Method decision; they do not replace every discipline’s professional practice.

The source architecture follows the same choice. Generic source recovery, evidence use, and reusable Method qualification retain their existing owners; RMP connects their supplied results to the research question, design, operational choices, actual trace, bounded claim and credibility question. This costs an explicit external-result dependency, but preserves source maturity, domain competence, and the ability to stop when a supplied premise is absent. A retelling can reduce navigation, but it also creates a second account whose source qualifications need maintenance. RMP instead explains the receiving research use and returns to the supplying Method for its content.

RMP.Preface:14 - What the repertoire foregrounds and leaves outside

The repertoire foregrounds the question/current-frame boundary, useful completion, exact owner returns, real design alternatives, honest allocation with insufficient evidence, question-preserving operations and trace, method-appropriate claim criticism, relevant credibility work, corpus synthesis, exact revision/return and research-Method improvement or retention.

Generic source, evidence, inference, representation, comparison, uncertainty, value, decision, Method, monitoring, assurance, acceptance, and current-state mechanics retain their FPF, Method Engineering, domain, or institutional owners. The full nine-pattern repertoire still depends on the particular field’s professional criteria, competence and obtainable results.
