Preface
MKT.Preface:1 - Problem frame - Useful offers in actual customer situations
Marketing here is a language of methods for understanding customers and markets, constructing and communicating offers, helping people choose and obtain useful results, and changing the commercial arrangements that connect these activities. It is for practitioners who can investigate their domain, work with customers and obtain engineering, operating or economic contributions when needed. A founder, service team, learning provider or business-to-business programme owner can enter with one bounded problem.
The broader field also contains brand strategy, media buying, price research, distribution systems, public policy and many specialised practices. This edition develops the branch concerned with customer situations, useful offers and their feasible commercial continuation. It does not promise a complete method for every marketing occupation. Its governed objects include a customer question, offer, choice, experience concept, relationship, commercial model and selected-customer programme. The regulated moves are investigating, constructing, agreeing, supplying, evaluating and revising those objects.
Use the language when misunderstanding a customer’s work, overextending evidence, disconnecting a promise from provision or confusing one kind of result with another could change the next decision. A known suitable offer with a workable ordinary purchase may need only its existing operating method. A personal learning problem, a community mandate, an engineering design or a liquidity decision keeps its own professional owner even when commercial work depends on it.
MKT.Preface:2 - Problem and forces - Connect usefulness, choice and provision
A company can attract attention without helping a customer act. It can deliver a requested feature without improving the result that matters to that customer. It can also construct a useful offer that its own organisation cannot sustain. Each local success leaves a different unresolved question. Treating them all as a conversion problem invites more persuasion where changed provision or an agreed refusal is needed.
Several forces shape the answer. Customers differ in their work, circumstances, authority and available help, while preparation is costly and some of it can be shared. A clear promise aids choice but can create reliance before provision is established. A timely decision needs a bounded inquiry, while a causal or population claim may require more evidence than that decision does. Current service, new exploration and learning often compete for the same people. A common programme must respect those simultaneous demands as well as its total cost.
The language keeps these differences usable. It supports an adequate small answer, construction when no suitable option exists, and a larger programme when several interdependent opportunities warrant it. Customer usefulness, learning, voluntary participation, provider solvency and commercial return require distinct questions and evidence.
MKT.Preface:3 - Solution - Enter through the result that is missing
Start by naming the decision and what its recipient needs to act. Recover relevant facts and existing results before commissioning more work. The following connections explain the repertoire; the Table of Contents remains the pattern index.
| Missing contribution | Construction and usable return | Receiving use and consequential return |
|---|---|---|
| A qualified customer or market answer | MKT.12 selects inquiry by a decision; MKT.1 distinguishes the problem, roles and circumstances. | MKT.2, MKT.4 or MKT.14 receives an answer with its scope. Uncertainty about a different population remains open. |
| An offer worth choosing | MKT.6 helps shape the useful result; MKT.2 constructs and tests an offer and its positioning. | MKT.3 can invite a meaningful response and MKT.4 can support choice. Missing provision returns to MKT.9/11 and its engineering owner. |
| A connection between intended experience and actual activity | MKT.5 develops an experience concept; MKT.8 constructs a map for a specific decision. | MKT.11 obtains a change in real work. If the explanation of an observed connection could change the action, MKT.12 obtains the needed evidence. |
| A fitting variant and supported continuation | MKT.9 compares options for a customer; MKT.11 aligns promises and contributions. | MKT.4 receives feasible terms and transition; MKT.6 supports useful use; MKT.7 handles continuation, restoration or ending. |
| Grounds to change or expand commercial work | MKT.10 evaluates a specified intervention; MKT.13 examines ordinary repeatability and deployment limits. | The responsible programme or deployment owner uses bounded conclusions together with supplied capacity and dated financial conditions. |
| Work across selected customer organisations | MKT.14 constructs common preparation and distinct continuations for qualified opportunities. | Customer teams receive their own next actions; providers receive actual obligations; the programme owner receives a whole comparison and revision conditions. |
These connections are conditional. MKT.6 need not invent a new goal when the customer’s useful result is already clear. MKT.12 can obtain an existing answer instead of launching a study. A customer journey map is useful when relationships across activities matter to a decision; it is unnecessary paperwork for an already understood local action. A commercial programme is worthwhile when its common preparation and coordination change what the whole team can achieve.
When a contribution is absent, ask for its actual result. “Can an appropriately prepared worker and accessible room support this service at that time?” can return a feasible arrangement or a precise blocker. Keep a conditional offer conditional until its consequential contributions are supplied.
MKT.Preface:4 - Composition and performance - Preserve the conditions of the whole
Some connections use an earlier result: qualification informs an offer, and evidence from a performed trial informs a later choice. Others are simultaneous. During a customer meeting, a facilitator may be eliciting a useful result, helping the person understand an offer and performing part of a larger programme. The same worker may also be responsible for an existing service. Those descriptions identify different contributions and constraints of the work occurring then. Account for the shared worker’s time against the whole programme.
For a proposed combination, name one intended result, the included opportunities, the period and the permitted conditions. Obtain preparation, capability, assignment, access, performance, support, coordination, updating and exception handling that the result requires. Count a shared contribution once where it is actually shared; count local work for each case that needs it. Preserve different resource kinds and time windows. Compare complete ways of producing a comparable result, including a smaller or later programme where the original promise cannot be supported.
Apply this whole-combination condition to the applications below. An apparently cheaper message can increase the number of unsupported responses. A common demonstration can save preparation while increasing coordination. An AI-generated explanation can reduce drafting time while leaving a subject judgement, an individual learning action or a timely human check unsupplied. Inspect those differences before replacing one constituent in a larger arrangement. Method Engineering develops the method and performance comparisons; engineering, organisation and operations supply the actual arrangements.
The four-trial calculation in MKT.13 and the 44/40-hour comparison in MKT.14 are deliberately separate constructed situations. In the latter, three organisations contain four independently changing opportunities. Keep the unit of work and the recipient of each result explicit.
MKT.Preface:5 - Recognition and assurance - Know what the evidence establishes
Recognising a situation selects a potentially useful method. Establishing its result requires the appropriate work and evidence. A stated difficulty may justify a clarifying conversation without establishing its prevalence. A feasible prototype can justify a bounded trial without establishing willingness to buy. A paid trial can demonstrate an acquisition without establishing sustained benefit or ordinary repeatability.
Give each consequential conclusion its object, source, conditions and limit. A customer’s account, an observed action, a provider commitment, a calculation and a causal estimate answer different questions. MKT.12 determines sufficient inquiry for a decision. MKT.10 uses causal modelling and identification when an effect claim is required, then carries uncertainty into the economic comparison. MKT.13 asks whether the ordinary arrangement can repeat and sustain the work at a named scale. None of these results supplies a missing permission or allocation.
For a learning offer, human performance under stated help conditions belongs to HCD; satisfaction and purchase are different observations. For community work, attendance can describe reach while leaving useful exchange and the burden of organising unresolved. The constructed applications show how to reason about these distinctions. They are neither observed success cases nor evidence of the effectiveness of the framework as a whole.
MKT.Preface:6 - Bias-Annotation - Recover whose result and whose burden
The paying organisation, buyer, user, learner, referrer, organiser and provider can have different purposes and authority. Ask whose result is being described and whose account is absent. A manager can fund a programme without determining what a worker personally wants to learn; a community host can invite discussion without promising its participants as sales prospects.
People who declined, could not gain access, needed unusual help or left early may reveal conditions that successful participants conceal. Include their relevant circumstances when the receiving question requires them. Avoid extrapolating from the customers easiest to contact or serve. An average can hide both an unserved group and a scarce contribution that makes the average possible.
Evidence access and disclosure themselves have conditions. Reuse a result only for the permitted purpose and adequate population. Obtain an appropriate anonymised example or customer-local continuation when sharing identifiable material is unavailable. These are working conditions to resolve with the relevant holders, not assumptions granted by a common programme.
MKT.Preface:7 - Conformance and common failures - Follow the intended use
Before relying on a connected result, follow one real or representative use from the opening question to the receiving action. Can the recipient understand the input, perform the needed operation and act on the returned result? Identify where a changed condition requires another decision. Use the following questions where they can change that reliance:
- Is the useful result distinguished from the requested product, communication response and provider revenue?
- Do the customer roles and differences change a real choice, rather than merely rename market segments?
- Does the offer retain the conditions of its engineering, learning or operating supply?
- Are the particular promise, recipient, permissions and next performer available?
- Does the evidence support the actual claim, population, conditions and time horizon being used?
- Can the whole programme fit its consequential resources and timing while keeping existing obligations?
- Can an affected person decline, defer, obtain help, correct a mistake or end the arrangement on understandable terms?
Several errors are invited by familiar marketing shorthand. A funnel can turn every pause into a sales failure even when the person has obtained useful help. A persona can substitute a stereotype for differences that actually change the offer. An experience concept can become a theme unrelated to work the provider supplies. Using one account score can make the team treat every opportunity as advanced after one contact. Correct the specific inference: recover the person’s work, the actual difference, the supplied contribution or the independently changing opportunity. The direct bodies develop each correction and its ordinary stopping point.
MKT.Preface:8 - Consequences - What changes in practice?
The team can make a smaller justified promise, obtain a missing contribution, stop an unnecessary inquiry, or decline an unsuitable programme before creating unsupported reliance. Customer knowledge can change actual provision. Shared preparation can be used where it remains adequate, with exceptions and continuing service included in the comparison. A negative or uncertain result remains useful when it changes the next decision.
This work also costs time. Jointly shaping a result, qualifying evidence, obtaining commitments and supporting exceptions can be more expensive than producing campaign materials. Use existing qualified results and direct local methods where sufficient. Deeper construction is warranted when it changes the available offer, its assurance or the whole burden.
The descriptions themselves have an obtaining cost: learning the language, locating a method, adapting it, checking an AI contribution and maintaining the explanation. Compare that cost over a named range of uses if it matters to adoption. Count common development once and repeated human work where it recurs.
MKT.Preface:9 - Architectural Rationale - A repertoire with connected results
A single chronological sales sequence would be easy to display but would conceal returning, parallel and noncommercial work. A list of independent tactics would preserve choice while leaving practitioners to invent the connections. This edition instead provides separately usable methods with explicit receiving results and shared applications. It allows a local answer without requiring every body, while developing the connections that make a larger answer possible.
Research and qualification remain distinct from offer construction because new evidence can change the problem without producing a solution. Offer positioning, experience design and execution remain distinct because a meaningful promise, a desired experience and available provision can fail separately. Customer success and continuation remain distinct from purchase because useful change and remaining obligations outlive the transaction. Intervention evaluation remains distinct from repeatability because a supported effect in one setting does not establish a sustainable commercial arrangement elsewhere.
MKT.14 owns construction of a programme for selected customer organisations. Its contribution is to combine shared preparation, individual opportunities and whole provision under change. A conventional single-customer enquiry can use MKT.1/2/4 without it. An advertising platform or customer database may assist the programme but does not establish the programme’s useful result, permissible commonality or receiving work.
Specialised contributions stay with their owners. Marketing can identify a missing service and consume a constructed variant without supplying systems engineering. It can frame the commercial question of an experiment without owning the organisation of search. It can offer education without defining how human capability develops, and it can take part in community activity without making that activity a stage of acquisition. These boundaries preserve usable differences when several methods address the same event.
MKT.Preface:10 - SoTA-Echoing - Preserve distinct answers to distinct questions
The source discussions in each body’s §11 state the adopted or adapted contribution and its limits. Together they support the following choices.
Customer research does not have one interchangeable Jobs-to-be-Done method. Inquiry into progress and switching and analysis of a job’s desired outcomes can ask different questions, use different units and support different decisions. MKT.12 selects the line from the receiving question; MKT.1 qualifies its customer differences. Positioning then uses relevant alternatives, distinctive capabilities and value under the customer’s circumstances. It is not a substitute for investigating whether the proposed contribution is useful.
Experience work contributes both the construction of an intended experience and attention to what actually occurs in use. MKT.5 retains that distinction; MKT.8 uses a journey map to expose relevant connections without manufacturing one compulsory route. Historical experience-economy and modular-service treatments are used for their specified constructions in MKT.5/9, with later experience and customer-success research informing the limits on what a provider can claim. Experience during use, engagement and useful change remain distinguishable.
Customer-success work makes the useful outcome and enabling participation consequential before and after purchase. MKT.6 adapts this contribution to joint goal formation and help; MKT.7 applies it to continuation and ending. A provider’s success metric cannot settle the customer’s own goal.
Commercial search and account-based work contribute different ways to investigate, organise and repeat customer work. MKT.13 preserves the difference between search and ordinary repeatable delivery. MKT.14 retains both individual programmes and justified common work, including their preparation and exception costs. Automation changes some work and introduces other work; it does not erase the difference between a contact signal and a qualified opportunity.
For causal questions, MKT.10 adopts the distinction between describing observations, identifying an effect under justified assumptions, estimating it and using it in a prospective choice. A fitted model, a before/after difference and a complete economic comparison are separate contributions. Reopen the affected inference when the population, intervention, supply conditions or relied-on source changes.
MKT.Preface:11 - Relations - Obtain the contribution the receiving decision needs
The edition uses FPF’s September 2026 foundation and the direct framework contributions listed under Sources and refresh. The named relations concern methods and their results.
| Supplier and result | Marketing use | Fact reopening that use |
|---|---|---|
| DOCA: a worthwhile problem and proposed contribution; RMP: a bounded research question and justified inquiry | MKT.1/12 and MKT.6 recover the question and sufficient answer. | A different decision, population or intended contribution. |
| SYSE.2/8 and ME.6: system use, offering, provider construction and method/performance comparison | MKT.2/9/11 receive feasible variants, preparation and limits. | Changed use, capability, access, compatibility or timing. |
| OCE.6/11 and OPS.6: effective assignments, coordination with current work and executable case continuation | MKT.11 and programme work obtain actual provision and response to exceptions. | Lost provision, a new overlapping obligation or unsupported continuation. |
| STR.8, MA.8 and Economic Reasoning and Coordination: sustained contribution, dated economic alternatives and exchange between different plans | MKT.10/13/14 bound deployment and its consequences; MKT.6/7 preserve differing purposes and commitments. | Changed scale, cash timing, alternatives or exchange conditions. |
| C.28.CM and MMP.15: causal model and identification of an intervention effect | MKT.10 connects the evaluation claim to its evidence. | A defeated assumption, different unit or unqualified transfer. |
| HCD.28/2 and selected HCD.20–27 contributions: learning product, personal programme and justified joint learning | The learning application obtains the learning and support construction behind an offer. | Changed later work, entry preparation, permitted help, personal route or provider conditions. |
| Community Building: useful exchanges, participation, provision and its agreed terms | The learning application keeps voluntary exchange and its maintenance usable alongside commercial work. | Changed participant purpose, mandate, contribution or sponsor condition. |

MKT.13 supplies and receives the commercial result within it; organisation, strategy and operations retain the decisions about the search arrangement and its continuation.
