Use this Reference while working on a problem. The question index points to a pattern and the result it can help you obtain. The cases explain how to combine contributions when one field cannot answer the whole question.
If you are new to the Suite, the README explains what a DPF is, what is available, and how to begin with colleagues or an AI assistant. Here, open the nearest question, then read the relevant pattern’s Problem frame, Solution and example. The pattern’s full conditions apply to your case.

The question index is designed for lookup while work is under way. Use the Suite README’s publication table to see the available DPFs and their pattern counts. Each row below identifies a working question, the relevant pattern and the result it can help you obtain. Open the linked body for its full conditions.
Find a starting pattern
Choose the row that matches the question you need to answer. Several patterns in one row are alternatives or complementary contributions; their own working conditions determine which you need.
Begin before anyone asks for help
A team can keep delivering through recurring adjustments, or regard unusable outputs as ordinary, without requesting a review. B.5.PI - Initiate Inquiry from Ongoing Work starts with an ordinary handover, demonstration or explanation of a consequential choice. Follow one result into its intended use and recover what was needed to obtain it. A comparison can yield a question, a retained early cue or a reasoned continuation without change; no anomaly label or PatternID is needed beforehand.
The connected move is to make a comparison possible, preserve what the familiar account misses, ask from the situation, obtain the missing contribution and return it to the original work. If a participant cannot express the distinction, B.5.EA helps without demanding a diagnosis. A.15.11 arranges the occasion and reachable advice when those are missing. It can also adapt known checks into a usable execution checklist; passing them does not settle concerns outside their scope.
Use an existing subject answer directly when it suffices. If the way of working itself needs development, ME.1 and ME.3 recover the method and its situational requirements. Research Method Practice enters only if the unresolved question needs research; human capability development enters when a person needs to learn a contribution. A cue without a feasible response is not completed assistance. The handover case shows the return to ordinary work.
Understand a problem and prepare a recommendation
| Your question | Open | What you can obtain |
|---|---|---|
| What advice is being requested, for whom, and who will decide? | PSD.1 - Bound the Decision-Support Engagement and Authority Boundary | An agreed question and scope for the inquiry, with the participants’ authority clear. |
| Are people describing different problems? Whose concern is missing? | PSD.2 - Recover Participants, Concerns, and Affected Systems for a Decision-Support Inquiry, PSD.3 - Generate Plural Problem Formulations, PSD.4 - Set and Reopen the Problem Boundary | The affected participants, several consequential problem formulations, and a justified boundary for the inquiry. |
| How can different models or problem-structuring methods help? | PSD.5 - Construct Complementary Situation and Option Models, PSD.6 - Select Problem-Structuring Methods and Combine Them When Needed, PSD.7 - Facilitate Decision-Support Inquiry and Preserve Material Dissent | Models chosen for their questions and limits, a suitable method or justified combination, and an inquiry that preserves material disagreement. |
| What could we do besides the first proposed option? | PSD.8 - Generate Decision Alternatives | Alternatives that differ in how they would address the problem. |
| What matters in the choice, and what might change the comparison? | PSD.9 - Represent Values and Trade-Offs, PSD.10 - Represent Decision-Relevant Uncertainty and Evidence Limits, PSD.11 - Compare Consequences of Decision Alternatives, PSD.12 - Test Robustness and Sensitivity of Decision Alternatives and Their Comparison | Explicit values and trade-offs, useful uncertainty statements, compared consequences, and sensitivity to assumptions. |
| What can we responsibly recommend now? | PSD.13 - Prepare and Return a Decision-Support Recommendation | A recommendation, retained alternatives, a worthwhile probe, a precise request for missing evidence, or a justified abstention. |
| When should earlier advice be reconsidered? | PSD.14 - Arrange Decision Follow-up or Reassess Advice After a Change | Observation and interpretation responsibilities for needed follow-up, or a qualified advice update with its affected premises and limits. |
| How do we find and advise on a development opportunity? | DOCA.1 - Bound the Development-Opportunity Inquiry, DOCA.7 - Bound the Development-Direction Advising Engagement, DOCA.8 - Requalify Changed Development Opportunities | A useful inquiry, qualified terms for development advice, or a requalified opportunity after its premises change. Enter at the missing result; PSD retains comparison and recommendation. |
Choose a strategic direction and bounded commitment
Use Strategy when a worthwhile contribution or obtaining way remains unsettled, or when direction, options and commitments must be related under changing conditions. Bring an adequate direction, Method, comparison or specialist result; enter only the contribution your decision still needs.
| Your question | Open | What you can obtain |
|---|---|---|
| What strategic decision are we making, for which system and horizon? | STR.1 - Identify the Strategic Decision, System, and Scope | A bounded decision frame and the holder of the choice, or the missing subject, purpose or authority. A frame can finish the inquiry. |
| A relied-on premise changed. What must we reconsider? | STR.2 - Assess How Material Changes Affect Strategic Assumptions and Choices | The affected assumption and a supported continue, qualify, reconsider or no-impact conclusion. |
| Which uncertainty or plausible future could change our choice? | STR.3 - Frame Uncertainty and the Strategic Problem, STR.4 - Construct Scenarios for Strategic Choices | Useful framings and discriminating futures, with their evidence limits. Reuse an adequate PSD uncertainty result. |
| We have a lead but no settled contribution. What could be worthwhile? | STR.5 - Generate Strategic Directions | A qualified or provisional problem/contribution account and its discriminating question, or a conditional direction filter when the contribution is sufficiently understood. Reuse an adequate direction. |
| The contribution is clear, but how could we obtain it and which options should remain open? | STR.6 - Construct Strategic Option Families or Develop Reusable Material for Strategic Exploration | Explained whole options with their support and exact gaps, including worthwhile continuation or withdrawal alternatives and the cost of preserving them. Reuse an adequate obtaining Method; an unexplained or unsupported way is not established capability. |
| We have a design, working procedure or intermediate result worth developing. What can we try before its contribution is settled? | STR.6 - Construct Strategic Option Families or Develop Reusable Material for Strategic Exploration, section 4.4 | An examined variation, reusable material for the next attempt and a reason to continue or stop. |
| Can a way that worked for one problem help with a changed problem? | STR.6 - Construct Strategic Option Families or Develop Reusable Material for Strategic Exploration, section 4.5 | A result checked against the changed problem’s requirements, with the next adaptation, problem revision or stop. Earlier uses retain their stated conditions. |
| Could more evidence change the choice enough to justify an experiment? | STR.7 - Decide Whether and How to Experiment While Preserving Strategic Options | A justified bounded experiment or a sufficient answer without one, with strategic options preserved as needed. |
| Which capabilities, permissions and other contributions would make the option feasible? | STR.8 - Relate Capabilities, Dependencies, Business Models, and Initiatives | The required contributions and dependencies, including business-model and initiative implications. Missing permission stops dependent use; more experimental evidence does not supply it. |
| How robust are the options, and what can we responsibly recommend or commit to? | STR.9 - Compare Strategic Options for Robustness and Option Value, STR.10 - Compare Strategic Commitments and Affected-System Consequences, STR.11 - Select Strategy, Portfolio Commitments, and Assumptions | A consequence-qualified comparison, retained alternatives or a recommendation. The authorized decision holder separately bounds any commitment. |
| Which signal should reopen the decision, or which Method for strategy work still fits? | STR.12 - Observe Signals to Continue or Reconsider Strategic Direction and Commitments, STR.13 - Choose and Maintain Strategy Methods | A timely follow-up decision or a supported choice among the strategy practitioner’s search, comparison or revision Methods, reopened only where changed conditions matter. Use STR.6 for the subject’s missing obtaining way. |
| Can simultaneous commitments coexist, and should our strategic practice change? | STR.14 - Reconcile Simultaneous Strategic Work Across Horizons and Scales, STR.15 - Deliberately Continue and Change Strategy Culture | A feasible reallocation or bounded conflict, or a qualified account and continuation/change decision about enacted strategic practice. Inquiry and intervention need their own worthwhile contribution. |
For a connected case, SensorCo’s service-trial decision relates evidence value, feasibility, permission and shared capacity without making a trial compulsory.
When a personal development aim must fit continuing shared work, connect the aim, practice, observation and actual commitments.
Engineer a system or a platform
When the whole engineering result could come from developing people, obtaining expertise or changing the arrangement, use the small-team comparison.
| Your question | Open | What you can obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Which system are we changing, for which use, and who else is affected? | SYSE.1 - Choose and Reopen the Project System-of-Interest, SYSE.16 - Recover the Systems and Conditions Needed for a Use Decision, SYSE.17 - Find Systems That May Bear Engineering Consequences | A useful project focus and the surrounding systems and consequences that the engineering decision must consider. |
| Which functions, components and interfaces should we choose? | SYSE.5 - Develop an Engineered System’s Functional Organization and Bearer Alternatives, SYSE.6 - Decide and Reopen the Engineering Architecture | Compared functional and architectural alternatives, a decision and its grounds. |
| How should we obtain the result: build, buy, reuse, use a provider, or combine them? | SYSE.24 - Choose How the Project Will Obtain a Needed Engineering Result; C.38 for the general comparison | Comparable whole arrangements, including the work and burden each leaves to the project. |
| What must be built or changed so the chosen system can exist? | SYSE.3 - Plan the Next System-Realization Action (Recursive Realization Network) | The first unsupported realization branch, its missing enabling condition, and a next planned action or earlier answer to revisit. |
| What can a model, trial or test justify? | SYSE.10 - Assess Research, Model, and Trial Results for an Engineering Decision, SYSE.4 - Decide Whether and How to Challenge an Engineering Claim | A claim tied to its evidence, configuration and conditions, with any further challenge needed for the decision. |
| Are the changes integrated and ready for the intended use? | SYSE.11 - Integrate a System for One Bounded Use, SYSE.13 - Establish Configuration Identity, Variants, and Effectivity, SYSE.14 - Make a Release Decision for Named Engineering Work or Use | Integration evidence, an identifiable configuration and a release decision for the stated use. |
| Is the platform helping practitioners do their work? | SYSE.12 - Develop or Retain an Engineering Platform for Practitioner Work; SYSE.25–SYSE.29 in the Systems Engineering contents | A justified choice to retain or change the enabling arrangement and the readiness or use assessment needed by the receiving decision, including adoption, economics and competing demands where relevant. |
| Is the difficulty specific to software delivery or reliable service? | The direct software-platform questions below, or SYSE.30–SYSE.41 in the software-platform part | A result for the particular delivery, operation or reliability problem. Use the general platform patterns for questions shared with laboratories, factories and other platforms. |
| Which engineering work can overlap, and which results are prerequisites? | SYSE.20 - Reconcile Overlapping Engineering Work and Required Order | An account of interacting engineering work and dependencies, with a bounded choice to retain or change the arrangement, further inquiry, or the unresolved question. |
| How can engineering practices continue and improve across people and time? | SYSE.21 - Decide Whether and How to Change Systems Engineering Culture | An account of actual practice, alternatives for its continuation or change, and the observations needed to judge them. |
Resolve a software-platform difficulty
These are independent entries for recurring software-platform difficulties. Open the one whose result is missing. For builds, feedback, artifact promotion, environments, data changes, capacity or deployment, use the other direct entries in the software-platform part. Questions shared with a laboratory or manufacturing platform return to the common platform Methods above.
| Your question | Open | First useful result and the condition for continuing |
|---|---|---|
| The dashboard is healthy, but can users complete the intended task? | SYSE.36 - Measure User Tasks and Set Software-Service Reliability Objectives | A task-level measurement definition and exercised observation path, or the exact measurement gap. An operative SLO additionally needs an agreed target, event/time basis and action policy. Reuse adequate measurement; a one-off check need not become an SLO. |
| Which reliability condition deserves an alert, and who can act? | SYSE.37 - Alert on Actionable Software-Service Reliability Risk | An exercised alert rule, intended response and known blind spots, or the missing observation or response capability. Budget-risk alerting needs that same service’s qualified measurement and objective. A critical task failure can warrant a direct alert. |
| May a deployed change reach more users? | SYSE.35 - Control Software Release Exposure with User-Relevant Signals | An exposure-and-evaluation arrangement, then a bounded proceed, stop or inconclusive result when relevant observations exist. Use the actual deployment result, a meaningful comparison, permission and a recovery action compatible with retained state. |
| A supported task failed or has an uncertain outcome. What can we restore or still use? | SYSE.38 - Diagnose and Restore a Failed Software-Platform Task | A verified restored or limited task result, or a narrowed cause question and specialist request. Establish the original attempt’s effects before a potentially harmful retry. Its major-incident branch adds coordinated response when the impact requires it, using actual assignments and authority. |
| Should we change this repeated platform work, and what would reduce its total burden? | SYSE.39 - Decide Whether and How to Reduce the Total Burden of Repetitive Platform Work | A justified choice to retain or change the recurring activity, or an unresolved comparison, with total user/provider burden considered over a stated horizon, including construction, maintenance and exceptions. A selected intervention needs comparable observations after use to establish continued benefit; fewer tickets alone do not establish it. |
For example, a deployed address-form change has passed its bounded deployment test. The release holder permits limited exposure with a qualified return to the old configuration. In SYSE.35’s constructed case, nine application requests do not exercise the changed form, while ten platform deployment tasks succeed. The application-use conclusion is inconclusive: it lacks observations of the changed task. Retain the supported deployment result and obtain relevant form observations under the permitted exposure; successful deployments cannot fill that measurement gap.
If the form then hides a required address component, the authorized response restricts exposure and verifies recovery under the actual data-compatibility conditions. Wider release remains a separate decision. Neither an alerting project nor a full platform redesign is a prerequisite for returning this bounded result.
Connect separately governed meanings and representations
Use the Semantic Integration Engineering DPF when one receiving use must combine claims, identifiers, classifications, models or records whose meanings and authority remain governed by different sources. Start with the result your use lacks; adequate supplied inputs permit direct entry into a later Method.
| Your question | Open | What you can obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Exactly who will use the integrated answer, for what question, and what loss or uncertainty is tolerable? | SIE.1 - Bound the Receiving Use and Semantic Contract | A use contract naming the receiver, required answer claims, quality/currentness conditions, authority limits, representative tests, stops and reopen conditions. |
| What does each source actually mean and own at the edition, profile, grain and interval used here? | SIE.2 - Recover and Qualify Source Semantics and Authority | A source semantic inventory with usable premises and exact gaps, rather than a list of field names. |
| Can an existing model express the distinctions this use needs, or must we extend or construct one? | SIE.3 - Construct or Reuse a Semantic Model for a Named Use | Qualified reuse of an adequate model, a tested extension or new model for the missing distinctions, or the exact unresolved model need. Choose formalization for the use it must support. |
| Which concepts, data fields or claims in the sources can be matched for this use, and which differences must remain explicit? | SIE.4 - Judge Cross-Source Correspondences and Their Permitted Uses | Qualified, directional correspondences and explicit unsupported or incompatible rows. |
| Are two identifiers about the same thing at the grain and interval that can change the answer? | SIE.5 - Resolve Cross-Source Identity without Erasing Identifier Authority | A cross-source identity disposition that preserves schemes, issuers, evidence and authority boundaries. |
| Can source claims be used together without hiding conflict or turning one source into universal truth? | SIE.6 - Fuse Source-Qualified Claims without Erasing Conflict | A source-qualified composition, explicit conflict or non-comparability, with derivation and scope retained. Investigate identity only when it can change that result. |
| What must an executable extraction or transformation do, reject and trace? | SIE.7 - Specify Semantic Extraction and Transformation Mappings | A mapping specification with conditions, cardinalities, units/codes, loss, errors, trace and tests. |
| Should the result be virtual, materialized or hybrid? | SIE.8 - Choose Virtual, Materialized, or Hybrid Semantic Realization | A supported exclusion, a scoped unresolved choice, or a realization decision based on serious alternatives and their full resource burden. When a prohibition is sufficient to rule out an option, exclude that option without designing it. State the implementation and interface conditions of an option you select. |
| How will the receiver interpret the supplied answer and its limitations? | SIE.9 - Connect a Receiving Use through a Semantic Interface | An interface with currentness, provenance, error branches, access assumptions and a return path that the receiving use can interpret. |
| Is the integrated result usable for this question, or what failure or uncertainty limits it? | SIE.10 - Validate a Semantic Integration Result for Its Receiving Use | A sufficient bounded failure or uncertainty return, or positive validation covering every load-bearing premise of the claimed whole or subset, including receiving interpretation. Reuse matching evidence. |
| A source, model, identifier, mapping or interface changed: which uses need attention? | SIE.11 - Trace Semantic Change and Revalidate Affected Uses | A compatible direct repair or the affected uses’ revised results, with matching evidence retained and unknown reliance left unresolved. A wider no-impact claim needs coverage of the uses it includes. |
| How can independent users maintain shared semantic modules while retaining their authorities? | SIE.12 - Govern Modular Semantic Commons without Universal Authority | A sufficient local interface agreement, or an arrangement for independently maintained modules, meanings, contribution and release rights, changes and affected uses. A release notice alone does not establish consumer migration. |
The twelve Methods supply guidance for a bounded semantic-integration result and the model, change or shared-module work it actually needs. Stop with the sufficient result for your question. If a required source premise, authorization or receiving-use result is unavailable, name that gap and its responsible source or practice. An integration package does not itself supply the application’s decision or proof of field effectiveness.
Use Data Engineering for pipeline construction and operation, the relevant master or domain authority for authoritative values and survivorship, Systems Engineering for configuration and release decisions, and the receiving practice for its operational decision. The AP242/QIF case shows those boundaries around one query.
For example, a changed supplier promise describes future availability while an application still interprets it as stock on hand. SIE.11 starts from that changed meaning and the application’s reliance; a JSON schema that still passes does not settle the affected use. SIE.3 helps when the model cannot express the distinction. Use SIE.12 when independent users must maintain shared modules. If a single interface agreement answers the receiving user’s question, complete that agreement and stop.
Improve a method or an organization
Method Engineering keeps the way of working, its descriptions and its support as separate questions, and leaves the choice of representation open. The optional PLUS-ME profile helps when recurring users need connected pattern-language knowledge or when that knowledge must be produced from sources.
When a local improvement must serve a larger result, Make an available contribution work in the whole task connects the comparison, actual use and any needed development. Sharing a method while retaining its development relates recipients’ capabilities, shared specialist time and continued development.
Connect contributions, concerns and consequences across a whole project follows professional contributions from a two-module engineering project into a change of the organization that supplies them. Use it when locally satisfactory work still leaves the whole unsupported, or capability, authority and shared provision need different repairs.
| Your question | Open | What you can obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Which way of working should we examine, and what must it contribute? | ME.1 - Choose and Reopen the Project’s Method-Engineering Focus, ME.3 - Build or Reconsider Situational Method Requirements and Fit Criteria | The method to investigate and requirements for its use in this situation. |
| Which alternatives and source editions can support this method question? | ME.2 - Recover a Reusable Method Repertoire and Its Lineages | A repertoire for the question, with identified Methods, provisional accounts, source contributions, supported lineages and evidence gaps kept distinct. |
| Which method structure fits, especially when methods are used together? | ME.6 - Compare Method-Architecture Alternatives and Simultaneous Enactment Conflicts; C.32.MWA when several practice structures must be reconciled | Compared alternatives and consequential conflicts among methods, work, capability, support and representations. |
| Can observations or records from several performances reveal a reusable way of working? | A.3.1.MR - Candidate-Method Recovery from Work Evidence; ME.18 - Reconstruct a Candidate Method Account through a Specialist Evidence Programme when a larger evidence programme is needed | A provisional account with source support, rivals, gaps and a distinguishing question, or an honest account of what happened. If a consequential uncertainty remains, ME.18 first specifies the claims and evidence needed to resolve it. |
| What useful contributions can we recover from a handbook, research paper or documentary corpus? | ME.4 - Recover Methods and Decision-Relevant Contributions from Documentary Packages and Corpora | A source-traceable account of the contributions needed for the decision, with each source’s meaning, role, recovery depth and limits preserved. |
| How should people find, understand and perform the method? | ME.8 - Author a MethodDescription or Candidate Method Account for Named Uses, ME.9 - Relate Method Representations across Their Different Uses, ME.10 - Configure an Enactment-Support Arrangement, Adding a Method Base When Needed | A method description, complementary representations and a workable support arrangement. |
| Did a revised method description improve the content, its presentation, or both? | ME.22 - Compare Method Descriptions by Content and Representation | A comparison for the same reader and action: the differences the evidence supports, any loss, and which revision or repair to retain. A description gain leaves Method effectiveness as a separate question. |
| Does the method work in a representative trial? | ME.11 - Trial the Method in Representative Work | Trial evidence about the result, failures and conditions of use. |
| Do the method and its descriptions agree? | ME.12 - Verify Method and MethodDescription Coherence | A coherence result identifying discrepancies that affect use. |
| Does it fit this situation, or transfer to the new one? | ME.13 - Validate a Method’s Situational Fit and Transfer | A justified fit or transfer conclusion and any conditions still needing evidence. |
| Is the method worth using compared with current alternatives? | ME.14 - Evaluate a Method’s Practical Worth Against Current Alternatives | A practical-value comparison, including the burden of use and change. |
| How should partly agreeing sources change our method descriptions or patterns? | ME.21 - Reconcile and Allocate Source Contributions for Method Use | One justified allocation: what the existing repertoire already supplies, what should be added or changed, what stays at its source, and what remains unresolved. Keep the reason for that choice and a reference to the source passage needed to revisit it. |
| Would a pattern language help recurring users, and how should its contributions connect? | ME.23 - Choose Whether and How to Build a Problem-First MethodDescription Pattern Language | An arrangement of patterns that shows where to enter for the user’s problem, what each pattern concerns and contributes, and the connections that affect use, such as dependencies, alternatives or conflicts. It explains when to stop and which question to revisit if a result is missing or changes. A direct method description may already meet the user’s need. |
| Does the language preserve the action and conditions it promises from a source, and what needs repair after that source changes? | ME.24 - Test and Refresh Method-Source Coverage by Reconstruction from Patterns | One reconstruction result: supported coverage at the tested scope, a deliberate omission with a reference to the source passage for that use, or a missing or contradicted contribution and its repair. Refresh follows the claims that used the changed premise; widen the inquiry when that dependence cannot be bounded. |
| Which Method Engineering result do we need next when several questions remain connected? | ME.20 - Use Pattern-Language Knowledge to Continue Situated Method Engineering | The answer or method contribution needed now, any condition that prevents the next action or leaves it undecided, and the earlier claims to revisit when a relevant fact changes. Stop when one answer is sufficient. |

Select and use checklists without losing the work question
Use Checklist Principles Framework when consequential questions are missed, entries lose their meaning, or local passes leave the shared result uncertain. Choose the contribution needed now; an adequate existing question set, form or answer can be reused.
| Your question | Open | What you can obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Which questions would reveal a consequential omission? | CHK.1 - Select Checklist Questions for a Work Result | A bounded question set with its subjects, grounds and useful coverage. Use one direct question when it suffices; return an unsupported criterion to domain inquiry. |
| Can we adapt or split the form without changing what an answer means? | CHK.2 - Construct a Checklist Template That Preserves Its Questions | A reusable form and a filled example whose subject, question, answer and grounds remain recoverable. Retain an existing form that already serves the use. |
| Why is the list skipped, prefilled or used without a needed participant? | CHK.3 - Fit a Checklist to Its Occasion of Use | A usable occasion with access to observations and a truthful response, or the specific missing capability or support to obtain. |
| What can we answer now, and what should change? | CHK.4 - Use a Checklist to Answer Questions and Act on the Results | Supported or unresolved answers and a separate next-action decision. A mismatch may prompt revision of the subject, description or use. Reuse prior answers while their grounds still apply. |
| Do the local answers support the result we need together? | CHK.5 - Reconcile Checklist Results Across Shared Work | A shared conclusion with its gaps and affected dependencies. Distinguish missing coordination from missing observations; a direct conversation can suffice. |
| Could this criterion or checker miss the difference that matters? | CHK.6 - Qualify Checklist Criteria and Checking Means | A bounded qualification, counterexample or unresolved basis for using the check. Reuse a qualification whose conditions still apply. |
